- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2015I read this story when I was a little girl in the original German. I always wished for my granddaughters to be able to read this wonderful little story of learning and not giving up. This book is in English and was written for German children who are learning English. Some of the words are in italics and have their German meaning at the end of the chapter. But it will do great for any American child who wants to read the story, and they can learn a little German at the same time. I was very happy to find this version and can't wait for my granddaughters to read it. : )
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2014I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story and a little magic. Well written and very humorous at times. Fun for the whole family regardless of your age! This book has always been my favorite of the Preußler series. If you have to choose just one of his books, get this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2013This was one of my favorite books growing up. I read it in a different translation and I'm thrilled I found the English version on Amazon for my daughter. I love it that Preussler's books continue to be in print for new generations of readers!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2013I used to listen to this book on a cassette. It was my favorite story. Finally I had an occasion to read it and was nicely surprised because there was more in the story than it was recorded.
This is a story of a "young" witch, who gets in trouble and has to prove that she's a good witch in a year. Because of a misunderstanding she starts to do good and punish these who make others suffer.
It's a great story for children. It shows that no matter what others think you can do good
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2014Even though I love the story and the book, I didn't give 5 stars because I thought the translation wasn't that good... I had hard time reading it! It seemed complicated... also - I thought the idea was great of having additional translation of some words in the book, yet, it made the reading of story to not flow :( ... I have seen the play of this book as a child and watched movie and read it in original language... as a child I remember after this story I decided I wanted to be a Little Witch when I grow up so - the story obviously left a huge impact on me to say it was great at least ;)! I bought the book now and in English because I hadn't read it in English yet and wanted to add it to my other "Little Witch" book collection!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2015I love this book as I have read it before in other language. English translation of this book is horrible - grammar mistakes, bad wording, and bad word choices. Some words don't even make sense - have to change it up as I am reading to my child as it is hard to understand. This book needs new English translation.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2005This children's book is the story of a "young" witch in Germany who is ostracised by her sisters for being a "bad" witch. She decides to become a good witch which she thinks means doing good deeds and using her spells and magic for good. And so begin her series of adventures, with each chapter relating how she stumbles upon and rights some wrong or does some good deed, all in her quirky manner and with a cynical and wise raven at her side.
The didactic nature may be a bit over the top for older children but there's still fun exploration of the traditional fairy tale landscape but subverted with the idea of a "good" witch. A good humoured if simple book. Oh and my edition had fabulous illustrations which were half the fun of reading this as a kid.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY DELIGHTFUL STORY BOOK!
This was a lovely book to read.
This is the story of `The Little Witch' - she's 127 years old (which is quite young for a Witch we are told!) but she's got problems; she's been told by the Witch Sisterhood that she's a bad Witch and must be much better if she's to join the Coven and midnight celebrations. The problem is; she thinks being a bad Witch is doing bad spells and stuff, and so you guessed it; she starts to be a `good' Witch thinking she's much better!
There are several adventures broken up into sections telling of various delightful and enchanting stories of how she helps people - all very different and interesting.
This is a really lovely book with lots of pictures/illustrations in the style of simple drawings. They're very clear and detailed, and I love the picture on page 59 which is my favourite - I did not think a simple drawing could be so vibrant! In many ways, this book is quite unique.
I love story-book Witches, and although this goes against type, (I normally prefer the traditional `wicked' story-book type Witch) this role-reversal did not diminish my enjoyment of the novel.
A very good read with delightful cover artwork.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is amazing book like all other books by the same author. I read it in my childhood and now read to my son. These books are different from what is produced nowadays for children, just plain texts without much giving for imagination. If you want your child to develop some imagination I really would recommend books for children by this author.
