There aren't enough stars in the heavens.
Disclaimer (in three parts)
1. This review will in no way be worthy of the magnificence that is this book.
2. I may, or may not have had a few drinks tonight, so I cannot guarantee complete coherency.
3. I'm going to gush about this book. I loved everything about it, and I am going to ramble and prattle, and otherwise just GUSH about it. I'm sorry.
I am a Tarryn Fisher fan. No, scratch that, I am a fangirl...I am an obsessive, cried like a baby the first time I met her, worship at my own personal shrine, stalker/fan! I thought that no book would ever knock her book, The Opportunist, from the top spot on my all time favorites list! But that is exactly what just happened. I could not have possibly gone into this book with higher expectations, but Tarryn managed to surpass them all!!
So, what did I love about this book?
The writing - ok, what can I say about Tarryn's writing that I haven't already said? She is a magical word fairy! A wizard...a sorcerer...there is no way that a human being should be able to put words together the way that she does...but she continues to do it!! Her words punch me straight in the heart and wash over my brain like a chemical bath that rewires the way my synapses fire. They are just brilliant words, strung together brilliantly, to create a masterpiece.
The characters - Seriously, have there ever been characters that rang more true? More pathetically broken? More authentically heroic? More vividly, hauntingly REAL? The answer is no. I feel these characters in my bones. In my soul. I believe them, even when I think they are doing the ABSOLUTE WRONG thing. They are real to me...When I sit and ponder their story, I picture where they are now, how they are doing, what they are feeling, and I know somewhere in my rational brain that they don't really exist, but I also KNOW in my heart, that they really do. They are me. They are you. They are Tarryn. We may not want to admit how much of us we see in them, but it's true.
The story - twisted, terrifying, haunting, heartbreaking, and yet so unbelievably beautiful - this story is not explainable. You need to go into it blind - with only the synopsis to color your view! Tarryn does such a masterful job of revealing the details...exposing each fact at the perfect time! The book is so suspenseful, and yet so wholly satisfying throughout that I was never impatient, just fascinated and on the edge of my seat from the very first words! The emotion was so very personal for me - it was like Tarryn had rummaged through my soul, dragged every dark piece into the light, animated every twisted thought that none of us admits to having, gave voice to every demon that I try so hard to keep caged, didn't shrink away from a single stain, and somehow made it all unbelievably gorgeous. I found myself short of breath at several times while reading, because the effort it took to process all the emotion literally made it difficult for me to breathe! Tarryn Fisher is an effing evil genius and I hate her as much as I love her!
This book...is just...indescribably brilliant. (Have I said Brilliant enough yet??). There is not a single word I would change, not a moment that didn't work for me, not an emotion that I couldn't feel straight into my bones. It is perfection. It crashed down on me like a tidal wave, and left my heart forever changed. Words have power. Tarryn wields them like a surgeon with a scalpel...and sometimes like a body-builder with a sledgehammer. You will hurt. You will be touched deeply. You will see hope and beauty and LIFE in the devastation. You MUST READ this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2015I went into this one flying blind. I didn't read anything about it, not even the blurb. I know, I live on the edge. In fact, the only reason that Mud Vein ended up on my radar was because it was suggested in several reviews of Marrow that there was a connection between the two books. And it has a solid 4 star review on Goodreads.
It's impossible for me to go into much detail without spoiling this book. So, I will try to say as little as possible.
The first few chapters were pretty freaking scary. Imagine waking up in a strange place in the middle of nowhere not knowing who put you there or when they will be back. It felt like a cross between Saw and Misery. It's downright terrifying, right? Senna Richards wakes up and is forced to face reality. She must accept that she is the only one who can solve the puzzle. On top of that, she quickly realizes that she is not alone. Someone from her past is also trapped inside the cabin. So many questions... Why are they here? Why him of all people? Did he put her here? Can Senna trust him? Are they going to die? WHY???
Then... the story slows down. It's still interesting, but not the path I thought it would take. We get to know the characters, their past, and how their lives intertwine. Eventhough this book was slow at times, I never felt bored. I couldn't put it down. I felt for the characters. My heart went out to Senna. She is stubborn and difficult and her social skills are seriously lacking. But, there is something completely endearing about her. This story is full of suffering, ugliness, mystery, fear, sadness and love.
After I finished reading this book, I needed a minute. I was in the midst of a terrible book hangover. Mud Vein is one of those stories that I found myself emotionally invested in and I had to sort through my feelings in order to give it a proper review. Tarryn Fisher is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. She has a way with words that just speaks to me. Sometimes it's more about the words on the page than the actual story. Tarryn's writing is beautiful, beautiful word porn.

5.0 out of 5 stars I felt all the damn things with this one.
Life is too short to hide your wrongs.
So I hide myself instead.
This was dark. This was upsetting. This was absolutely EVERYTHING.
Adding this to the books that will stay with me for all of time ✔️ ..I am truly blown away with this story.
It’s full of suspense, mystery, and more on the thriller side, but my god, if I didn’t love every part of it. After I finished, I just sat and sobbed like a baby!
I took this rec from a book friend, and I’m so glad I did. I don’t know why I’ve never seen this book talked about, I know it’s a bit on the older side, but it’s so worth the read. It's worth talking about. It's worth crying over.
It’s only January, and I can guarantee this will be in my top reads of 2023.
I went in completely blind because that’s how I like to read all of my books, but there are definitely some darker themes and subjects
surrounding this one, and if you are easily triggered, I would check those warnings first.
Humans weren't made to carry someone else's weight. We can barely lift our own.
I'd rather not be looked at if all people are seeing are the things I do, or the things that happen to me instead of who I am.
You are a stillness. And I tried to move you. It didn't work. But that doesn't mean you didn't move me. I heard everything you didn't say. I heard it so loudly that I couldn't shut it off.
Senna – my goodness! My heart is so full of love and ache for this woman. And Issac, the most patient, selfless man.
Their story is traumatic, horrifying, and tragic. It's not easy, but then life isn't easy either.
I’m not going to give you a breakdown because I won’t spoil this, but if you love suspenseful romance bordering thriller – this one’s for you!
Books that make me feel are my drug, and let me tell you, I felt all the damn things with this one.
It can tangle, and it can stretch, but it can never break.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une lecture qui ne ressemble à aucune autre

4.0 out of 5 stars A breathless journey
Whoa... my emotions are all over the place. You just won't be able to to guess even a little bit about what's going to happen next. Especially the BIG WHY of it all. Till the very last page of the book, I was on full on nail biting, edge of my seat with the suspense. It's just so intense. Trust me you won't be able to keep the book down for even a second. The book is just spectacularly written. A breathless journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I just finished the book. I don't know how to write about a book that has a character so strong and so frail at the same time. I think that Tarryn totally outdone herself. I had much sympathy for Senna because i understand why she thought the way she thought, what made her that way, what life show to her was difficulty and sadness and she survived in that life the way she could. I think she very selfish in certain times but that was the she knew. Tarryn, the way you talk about rape and how Senna feel it was incredible. I'm not a rape victim but i think that i almost could feel what is that to sa person, I know that is impossible but your to put it in words was intense. This book made something that i'm not a fan but in the i had tears in my eyes. The last frase was brilliant. The Senna perceive that Nick was a bastard is wonderful too, she is beautiful she is discovering herself again. I really was sad when she knew the cancer was back but i guess that this is life, and with Florence and Machine of soundtrack is better. It was wonderful of you to write this books. I'm sorry for not have reading this book sooner but i'm so happy that i finally have the courage to. It's sad and it's rough and it's troubling and made me think too much in my actions but it's so well writed and it's very incredible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping read, flawlessly written but definitely a psychological thriller
Mud Vein by Tarryn Fisher
5 stars!!
“It’s your darkness that pulls me in. Your mud vein. But sometimes having a mud vein will kill you.”
I really do not know where to start with this review. This is one book that was hard to read and is going to be extremely hard to review. With Tarryn Fisher you always know to expect the unexpected and this book is no different. While personally I didn’t like the ending it is what I have come to expect and I can see why Tarryn chose to end it that way, you know that with Tarryn at the other end of the keyboard it will never be what you think or want. One thing that you cannot deny though is that this book is flawlessly written, it will have you captivated from the start and will have you second guessing, third guessing and eternally guessing who the captor is, but such is the genius in the way it is written I bet you will be wrong time and time again. I for one never guessed and I watch a lot of crime type programmes and thought I would have seen through the plot, but alas no, I was wrong, each and every time.
If you are going into this thinking that this is a dark and erotic book then think again, I would say more of a dark, psychological thriller…more like a horror film and definitely not a romance. Actually, I think that this would make a great film, one that I would definitely watch. You are kept on the edge of your seat at all times, never knowing what is around the corner and it is that constant state of suspense that keeps you hanging and turning the pages. The words truly draw you in and you feel their fear, you feel their hunger, you feel their mental torture, you just FEEL and I love a book that makes me FEEL.
The blurb gives nothing away, only the beginning of the book. Senna wakes one morning with what she thinks is the mother of all hangovers, after all she was out celebrating her birthday. She soon realises she has no idea where she is and automatically thinks she has woken up in a strangers bed. She soon realises that she wishes that is what had happened but in reality her nightmare was truly beginning. She was caged in a totally desolate house surrounded by snow and an electrified fence, there was some food but there was also someone else…someone from her past…but why were they here? Why were they together? Where were they? Who had done this to them? And more importantly how were they going to escape this hell hole?
Totally and utterly isolated and while not knowing who to trust, these two have to work together to survive. It is obvious they have history but we are not let in on why or how until the book flashes back to the past. Slowly but surely their back story is seeped out and you begin to understand, their pasts are painful, can that all be put aside in the name of survival?
Senna is a novelist, so in a way she is used to her own company but she really has had a s*** life. She has never conformed, never fit in, she can come across as aggressive and this has led to a solitary, lonely existence. She is dealt blow after blow and you begin to wonder if any sane person would be able to cope. There are people that are willing to help, friendships to be made, but Senna keeps them all at arm’s length, she refuses to let anyone in no matter how hard they try or persevere. Sometimes I just wanted to jump into the kindle and slap her about a bit, I wanted her to believe in herself, believe in the intentions of others, see people for who they were and what they wanted to be, but she was so damn stubborn. She would rather have been a recluse than believe that there was a happy ever after for her, waiting for her, she wouldn’t let anyone penetrate her broken mind or heart and it broke my heart, badly!!
“The more people you let in, the more bad you let in.”
“You’ve been silent your whole life. You were silent when we met, silent when you suffered. Silent when life kept hitting you. I was like that too, a little. But not like you. You are a stillness…Your silence, Senna, I hear it so loudly.”
Flitting from past to present this book puts you through the wringer both mentally and emotionally. I was so absorbed, I felt their isolation, I lived through it and it does end up haunting you. I was thinking about this book for days. You find yourself imagining it was you in their predicament, I was forever thinking, and what would I do? The monotony, the quiet, the hunger, the lack of trust, the constant state of being scared and frightened, it has you on the edge and as much as I wanted to read about the past I couldn’t wait for the book to switch back to the present.
This is definitely a book you know you have read, but I do feel it is what I call a “marmite” book; you will either love it or hate it. If you love that suspenseful, thriller type book, you will LOVE this book. If you appreciate flawless, genius writing, you will LOVE this book. If you want your head screwed with, you will LOVE this book.
“The truth is for the mind”
“Lies are for the heart. So let’s just keep lying.”
Once again, I have to admit that Tarryn is a genius; she obviously has a “dark side” that has been put out there for all to see. I hope, like me you appreciate this book for what it is…a masterfully written, total and utter mind ****. It is highly addictive and once again I will say this needs to be made into a film. I can totally see this on the big screen.
“Every time you want to remember what love feels like, you look for me.”
Amazing job Tarryn!
