Just fantastic. Read it! The two main characters were believable and likable and so human: I felt disoriented when they lost themselves and joy when they discovered who they were and their value. The baggage each accumulated over the years and how their lives just happened to them instead of their deciding what it should be; is the very essence of being a human being. Tess’ obligation to her sister is grounded in love yet sometime simmers with the knowledge of what she had to give up. And Gus’s unresolved relationship with his older brother Dolores his entire life until.... what was meant to happen finally does. Wonderful prose. I couldn’t put it down.

Gus and Tess cross paths in Italy as 18 year olds getting ready to head off to college. Tess returns home to find her whole world changed and her plans to go to college are no longer an option. Gus and Tess' lives over the next 16 years are told throughout this book; lives filled with difficulties, poor choices and paths not taken.
This is a very engaging book where the readers are cheering for Gus and Tess throughout the book. I think this book would make a great movie and it was a book I thoroughly enjoyed.

Such a wonderful story of hope and of life…the daily struggles of it that just fade away when the right person comes along! Kate does a beautiful job of capturing feelings, and her descriptions are spot-on!

There were parts of this story that I really liked. I liked the main idea in the story that we may have “close encounters” with certain people throughout our lives, that fate/serendipity/God – whatever you want to call it – directs our paths. I love how this theme is woven into the story, sometimes so discreetly, you almost miss it.

Overall, an interesting and well-written story. I liked most of the characters. I got a little bored with the side stories, waiting for the h/h to finally get together, but it ended perfectly.

This was almost a (5) star romance. I couldn't help but like and sympathize with the two destined-to-finally-be-together characters, Tess and Gus. But, the author also made each them a little bit too weak, too self-sacrificing, and that made them just a little annoying. I kept wanting to tell them NOT to make such poor choices. The ending as a bittersweet note to it, which shouldn't surprise anyone since there is a tone of sadness throughout the story. Tess and Gus have both experienced loss, and I think that is the theme of the story.

What an incredibly beautiful story! Tess and Gus spend a lifetime of almosts, a series of seemingly inconsequential brief encounters as we follow them in their lives from teenagers to adulthood. A love story like no other, it shares the paths of two people fated to meet again and again until the time is right. Truly makes you think about timing and how one small changed plan may have or could change the outcome of your entire life. Highly recommended read!!

Pleasantly surprising. Two relatable and sympathetic characters on a long and winding journey toward ultimate belonging and fulfillment.

A slender fragile thread that links 2 characters in a cast of many. Near misses, passing moments kept my interest fully engaged as the reader, and a few what ifs kept my brain working.
I am guilty of reading too quickly and skimming over details, but this story kept me fully aware of what was happening.
I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Si vous avez aimé "Un jour" de David Nicholls...
Reviewed in France on September 20, 2016
