Janet Lansbury is unique among parenting experts. As a RIE teacher and student of pioneering child specialist Magda Gerber, her advice is not based solely on formal studies and the research of others, but also on her twenty years of hands-on experience guiding hundreds of parents and their toddlers. “No Bad Kids” is a collection of Janet's most popular and widely read articles pertaining to common toddler behaviors and how respectful parenting practices can be applied to benefit both parents and children. It covers such common topics as punishment, cooperation, boundaries, testing, tantrums, hitting, and more. “No Bad Kids” provides a practical, indispensable tool for parents who are anticipating or experiencing those critical years when toddlers are developmentally obliged to test the limits of our patience and love. Armed with knowledge and a clearer sense of the world through our children’s eyes, this period of uncertainty can afford a myriad of opportunities to forge unbreakable bonds of trust and respect.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An effective, respectful approach to discipline requires a new lens, a lens that differs from many of the most common approaches to discipline. No Bad Kids offers that lens, providing practical ways to respond to the challenges of toddlerhood while nurturing a respectful relationship with your child. This book empowers parents to calmly address behaviors while honoring kids' feelings and experiences, thus giving them discipline experiences that help their developing brains thrive." - Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, co-author of The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline

"Powerful, inspirational, and supportive. Janet Lansbury has expanded and built upon what Magda Gerber originally taught and modeled, while remaining true to the original philosophy. This is an indispensable guide." -
Lisa Sunbury,RegardingBaby.org

"Whenever I have moments of doubt or confusion -- surrounding tantrums, moving, new schools, etc.-- I often turn to Janet Lansbury's website. I've mentioned it a few times because her thoughtful advice always rings true. She clearly
respects children and reminds you that they're whole people in need of gentle love and compassion -- even when they're driving you bats:) Her books about parenting and discipline reflect this wonderful approach." - Joanna Goddard, A CUP OF JO

A former actress and model, Janet’s passion for parent education began when she became a mother and sought guidance from infant expert Magda Gerber. Deeply inspired and grateful for her wisdom, she began training with Magda professionally. For the last 20 years, Janet has taught RIE parenting classes in Los Angeles, been a presenter at numerous early childhood conferences, written parenting articles, and served on the board of directors of Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE).

Janet is privileged to now be supporting hundreds of thousands of parents across the globe through her website JanetLansbury.com, sharing insights gained through her parenting classes and personal experiences as a mother of three. A REAL LIFE GEM FOR SINGLE MOMS.
5 out of 5 stars
A REAL LIFE GEM FOR SINGLE MOMS.
GENIUS. A real mother that looks, sounds, and comforts like the mom we always wanted. My family thought I was ridiculous for wanting to read a “parenting book” to better understand my then 3 year old, now 4 year old son’s accumulating melt downs during a recent shift and transition. Even with no transitions in a regular household or for a single mother, this is great book full of reassurance. It’s not a parenting book, it’s more of a comfort of how to always do the right things for your child. It gives you a lot of insight to reflect on your habits, and how to not provoke & enable behaviors gently so that you can have some peace of mind.Really enjoyed this book, and her suggestions really did work on my son. Persistence is key, when you fail, try again, but with consistency and a calm mind, this is a GEM.

Janet Lansbury works with children and parents to help correct behavior issues and produces the “No Bad Kids” podcast. Her philosophy of childhood psychology and parenting follows that of Magda Gerber, the founder of RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers). The advice and knowledge contained in this book serves as a helpful guide for parents of any child, even those without serious behavior issues. My children are both very young (1 and 3) and generally well-behaved, but I found this book extremely helpful for many reasons.

First and foremost, NO BAD KIDS provides perspective on why children (especially toddlers) behave as they do and what they are trying to communicate by their behavior. They are not adults and their brains do not work in the same way adult brains do. Toddlers are basically controlled by their emotions and feelings and easily become overwhelmed. They have trouble communicating clearly and are often frustrated by this limitation. This book is a great help in gaining some understanding of what it must be like as a toddler, which alone helps a parent have more patience and sympathy with outrageous and ridiculous behavior.

Many important lessons are imparted in this book. One is that parents shouldn’t be afraid or put-off by tantrums, whining, or crying. By trying to see things from a child’s point of view a parent can gain an important perspective. Acting like little brats is an effective way to communicate feelings and emotions and parents should try hard to understand and interpret the intended communication. While it is obviously annoying to deal with troublesome kids, we should try our hardest not to let it make us resentful, which can lead to other negative feelings towards your children, whom obviously need to know that they are loved and cherished. Landbury also emphasizes the importance of logical and clear boundaries when dealing with kids. Consistency and resolve in parents help kids feel safe. They want adults to be in charge but need to challenge us to develop a clear picture of how they fit into the world. Calm, confident, and resolute are the attributes parents should strive for. Don’t allow yourself to argue with your kids, just tell them what you are doing and why. It is good to explain why things are happening as they are, but not to plead for understanding.

Much of the material in this book sounds easy in theory but is extremely difficult in practice. Not getting rattled by a ridiculous-acting toddler and keeping calm while being embarrassed by a tantruming kid in public seems impossible, but just the recognizing what the ideal interaction would look like helps in controlling our own emotions when difficult situations arise.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to parents of toddlers, regardless of whether they have behavior issues. All toddlers act out at some level and having the knowledge contained in this book will be a help to any parent.

THIS is THE book that has saved us. We have two 2-year-old (almost 3 now) boys and were desperate for a solid method in child rearing. Lansbury's philosophies, based on Magda's RIE, are so so so so helpful. Yes, "so so so so" helpful. Without these ideas, we'd be in trouble. When our folks (the boys' grandparents) and any of our siblings (aunts and uncles) watch the kids, they continuously comment how "easy" our kids are because they can just talk to them and the boys listen. The kids feel respected and listened to and cared for, and respond likewise. It's not magic- we DO have almost 3-year-olds, BUT for the last year, our lives have been made so much easier, better, and happier thanks to this book (and Janet's blog). We have given this book as a gift to our closest friends and siblings for their kids and everyone who actually follows says how great the ideas are. WINNER WINNER chicken dinner!

For the record, I've spent a LOT of time researching best parenting methods, child care, minimalism, gentle parenting (which I love in many ways), and attachment parenting. Though we don't strictly abide by RIE, we follow many of the methods and are continuously amazed at how well they work. A key is doing things together (both parents). We sure love a whole lot that comes from RIE.

On the other hand, we would NEVER follow a few aspects parts of RIE, such as cry it out. We did do *some* sleep training, which did include some crying, but never straight cry it out. Kids have a heart and soul and it is unnatural, according to history of humans and animals, to leave babies to cry alone. Mothers/caretakers have always, since the beginning of time, cared for babies closely, including holding them (attachment parenting) and allowing them to sleep near others (mostly out of necessity). All kids are different and some need/want more "attachment" than others, but all really need touch on a very regular basis. Touch is healing and healthy. If I could have, I would have likely done more attachment parenting and even bed-sharing, but with twins and my health challenges, it wasn't possible. Kids are only young for so long. Then they grow up and I bet we'll wish they wanted to be held more. At the same time, this book emphasizes the goals of respecting kids and talking to them like whole people, which is awesome. Everyone just needs to pick what feels right/best for them and their family.

Everyone’s parenting journey is different, because every child, mother, father and home is unique and special. I don’t believe there’s one blanket solution for everyone- but after I found this book- it changed my life, it changed my relationship with my toddler and kids, and I have shared it multiple times with other parents and they’ve always told me that they had the same results!
I haven’t patented a toddler since 2015 and I just recently picked this book back up because Ruby has entered her toddler stage.
I recommend this book for all parents with toddlers and older kids. I also recommend the book Elevated Childcare as well. Life with my littles isn’t exhausting, or challenging after embracing what I’ve learned with these books!

The information is sold and helpful; however, the book is essentially just a collection of articles from her website and podcast with each chapter being a different one. It’s not really cohesive as a whole book aside from the overall topic at hand. It’s also smaller than the average book size. As far as the seller side, I purchased a pre owned copy and the book didn’t have marks in it, but had dog eared pages nearly every other page, which was extremely annoying. The book did arrive much earlier than anticipated.

I totally recommend this book for parents of kids 0-5 years old (critical years); simply put, you will become a better parent to your child. Janet is an amazing respectful parenting expert; she'll help you become more understanding, calm and patient. It is one of my top parenting books (I also recommend The Whole Brain Child by D. Siegel and T. Bryson) - as it has completely changed my perspective on child development and made me a better parent. It's also easy to read and not big/thick - which is essential for busy (and sleep-deprived) parents.

Loved this book. Easy to read, clear, great examples, easy to put into practice, and has a great impact on your relationship with your toddler (a 2 year old in my case). Much easier to get her dressed, changed, into the car seat (sort of) etc. Be warned though - once you start parenting this way, you may notice that your own parents, grandparents etc., do things very differently and over-rely on distraction techniques to avoid meltdowns. You can have fun deciding whether to let them continue (threatening your great work) or gently suggesting a different way (storms will start brewing, this will NEVER be forgotten and mentioned at every family get together). Enjoy!
