The American Lady (The Glassblower Trilogy, 2) Paperback – March 10, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Tempestuous and beautiful Wanda Miles, daughter of Ruth and Stephen Miles (or so she thinks), aspires to more than the life of a debutante, but the trouble is she doesn’t know precisely what she wants. Then her aunt Marie, the family’s renowned glassblower, arrives from Lauscha, Germany, and Wanda decides that learning about her ancestry may hold the key to her future. When Marie accidentally reveals a long-held secret about Wanda’s parents, Wanda goes to Lauscha to unravel the truth.
While Marie finds herself increasingly swept up in New York City’s bohemian social scene―catching the eye of a handsome young Italian in the process―Wanda explores a past she never knew in the village of her mother’s youth―and begins to build a life that she never expected.
A sweeping tale that takes readers from the small town of Lauscha to the skyscrapers of New York and the sun-kissed coast of Italy, The American Lady is a tribute to the enduring power of family and what we’ll do in the name of love.

About the author
Petra Durst-Benning has developed a loyal following for her well-researched historical novels in her native Germany, where she lives with her husband. She has written more than a dozen books, many of which have gone on to be bestsellers. Durst-Benning's love of the US dates back many years. She visited frequently as a child and developed a passion for American bestsellers, which went on to inspire her own writing career in later years. The Glassblower's English-language debut is, in many ways, the fulfillment of a girlhood dream.

As the Glass Blower ends the middle sister elopes to America with a wealthy american businessman.
Now the American Lady begins. The youngest sister, the creative force of ,the now, very successful family business feels burned out and leaves her family and the man she has been living with for a long while, although unmarried. To seek to revitalize herself she decides to visit her sister in America, now a wealthy New York socialite with a daughter who has everything she could possibly want. The daughter was born in the little village in Germany to father she knows nothing about, her mothers first husband.
As the story unfolds there is romance first for the visiting sister and then drama as see flees to Italy with a man she falls in love with and has married. Tragedy ensues as she gives birth to a child. In a convoluted turn of events the daughter of the New York socialite takes the new born child of her aunt and returns to Germany to meet her other aunt and tell of the tragedy which has befallen the family. She also wants to confront the father she has finally found out about. She too falls in love and ends up staying in this small town.
All in all this series is rather like a soap opera, and well told story but all the same s story of love, love loss and tragedy.
An easy and satisfying read.

. It is now 18 years later and a lot has changed.
Back home in Lauscha the glassblowing business is thriving and when Wanda returns to meet her family she gets a bit more than she bargained for.
Another well written book and if you enjoyed the first book then you'll enjoy this, but beware , you'll want to read the 3rd book in the trilogy as there's so much still left to find out.
The pages turned and I was experiencing each and every one of them!
I felt all of the emotions written on the pages and envisioned every part of the journey I was taken on, throughout the whole story.
I would recommend it as an enjoyable escape!
Interesting to see how "history repeats itself" in the generations . I found the characters very well described (appearance and demeanor that one could almost create a picture in your mind of who they really were.
As the reader you got a sense of the hardships the glassblowers and their families had to endure. Also encouraged by how they did manage to come up with new ways of doing business, create new glass pieces and techniques to appeal to current generation of buyers. They were evolving as proud world class artists.
Now onto the next book 3/3
