Tempestuous and beautiful Wanda Miles, daughter of Ruth and Stephen Miles (or so she thinks), aspires to more than the life of a debutante, but the trouble is she doesn’t know precisely what she wants. Then her aunt Marie, the family’s renowned glassblower, arrives from Lauscha, Germany, and Wanda decides that learning about her ancestry may hold the key to her future. When Marie accidentally reveals a long-held secret about Wanda’s parents, Wanda goes to Lauscha to unravel the truth.

While Marie finds herself increasingly swept up in New York City’s bohemian social scene―catching the eye of a handsome young Italian in the process―Wanda explores a past she never knew in the village of her mother’s youth―and begins to build a life that she never expected.

A sweeping tale that takes readers from the small town of Lauscha to the skyscrapers of New York and the sun-kissed coast of Italy, The American Lady is a tribute to the enduring power of family and what we’ll do in the name of love.

Petra Durst-Benning has developed a loyal following for her well-researched historical novels in her native Germany, where she lives with her husband. She has written more than a dozen books, many of which have gone on to be bestsellers. Durst-Benning's love of the US dates back many years. She visited frequently as a child and developed a passion for American bestsellers, which went on to inspire her own writing career in later years. The Glassblower's English-language debut is, in many ways, the fulfillment of a girlhood dream.

Wonderful story! Recommend to all women but especially sisters. Wholesome story of life's trials and tribulations, ups and downs, and moments with memories of perfect joy.

This is the continuation of the narrative started in The Glass Blowers. A story of three sisters living in a small town of glassblowers in Germany. This second novel takes up the story of these young women just after they have finally achieved a certain amount of success after years of hardships after the death of their father. The success is achieved after the youngest girl makes the unheard of step to become a glassblower herself.
As the Glass Blower ends the middle sister elopes to America with a wealthy american businessman.
Now the American Lady begins. The youngest sister, the creative force of ,the now, very successful family business feels burned out and leaves her family and the man she has been living with for a long while, although unmarried. To seek to revitalize herself she decides to visit her sister in America, now a wealthy New York socialite with a daughter who has everything she could possibly want. The daughter was born in the little village in Germany to father she knows nothing about, her mothers first husband.
As the story unfolds there is romance first for the visiting sister and then drama as see flees to Italy with a man she falls in love with and has married. Tragedy ensues as she gives birth to a child. In a convoluted turn of events the daughter of the New York socialite takes the new born child of her aunt and returns to Germany to meet her other aunt and tell of the tragedy which has befallen the family. She also wants to confront the father she has finally found out about. She too falls in love and ends up staying in this small town.
All in all this series is rather like a soap opera, and well told story but all the same s story of love, love loss and tragedy.
An easy and satisfying read.

A reunited daughter and father in "Glassblower Paradise". Finding love losing one of the sisters to illness. Accepting the responsibility of a new born beautiful baby girl, makes for a read you will enjoy. Accepting The responsibility of family, good and bad. Lives well lived. A beautiful story of love, disappointments in lives, willingness to correct the wrongs life throws at these people.

"The Glassblowers" is the first book in the trilogy. It tells of three sisters whose father has died and they must find work to survive. It was an interesting read on glassblowing and how the sisters survived and thrived. "The American Lady" is the second book in the trilogy. It is 17 years after the end of the first book "The Glassblowers". This book is set in the USA and Sister Ruth has moved to US and her daughter, Wanda, is now a teenager. But some of the things just did not seem real and would not have happened during that era. It was a mediocre book. I read the third book in the series "Paradise of Glass" which was somewhat boring and did a lot or repeating of what was in the other books. This book is more about Wanda and how she survives in Germany once she is told that Germany is where she was born and her biological father lives there. Some things does not seem like it would have happened back in the early 1900s and it was not believable.

I'm really enjoying the story of the Steinmann sisters. This installment, the second in the trilogy, is a good, solid read. I didn't tear through this novel like I did the fist one, but I really, really enjoyed it. It's a book I would put down to read something else, but I kept coming back to the story because I truly cared about the characters and was interested to see where their individual journey's would take them. The American Lady, largely focuses on a new member of the Steinmann clan, Wanda Miles, as she searches to find her path in life. Wanda is curious, experimental, and bold. I admired her willingness to fail at something only to turn around and take on a new challenge. Wanda is not afraid to defy what is expected of her or to disappoint others as she strives to remain true to the woman she is becoming. I am looking forward to the third and final novel in the series!

The story continues in this novel as we find out what happened when Ruth left to go to America and what her daughter is up to now
. It is now 18 years later and a lot has changed.
Back home in Lauscha the glassblowing business is thriving and when Wanda returns to meet her family she gets a bit more than she bargained for.
Another well written book and if you enjoyed the first book then you'll enjoy this, but beware , you'll want to read the 3rd book in the trilogy as there's so much still left to find out.

This is the second book in the Glassblower Trilogy and I've just purchased the third one as I've enjoyed them so much. The books are set in a small village in Germany and in the USA in the years prior to WW1 and are about several generations of women who take up the family craft/art of glassblowing. The author, Petra Durst-Benning, transported me into the lives of her characters. They are interesting and strong women and the books resound with strong family values and the rewards which come with persisting in the face of life's challenges.

I truly enjoyed reading this book.
The pages turned and I was experiencing each and every one of them!
I felt all of the emotions written on the pages and envisioned every part of the journey I was taken on, throughout the whole story.
I would recommend it as an enjoyable escape!

Having enjoyed the first in the trilogy I was worried this would not come up to the same standard, but I had no need to worry, it was as excellent as 'The Glassblower' . It can be read as a stand alone novel, but is more interesting as a follow on, continuing the family saga and including all the characters first met in the original book.

Read this as a ebook-which made reading this easy to pick up. Enjoyed this #2 book of trilogy
Interesting to see how "history repeats itself" in the generations . I found the characters very well described (appearance and demeanor that one could almost create a picture in your mind of who they really were.
As the reader you got a sense of the hardships the glassblowers and their families had to endure. Also encouraged by how they did manage to come up with new ways of doing business, create new glass pieces and techniques to appeal to current generation of buyers. They were evolving as proud world class artists.

Now onto the next book 3/3
