“Charlie is a vibrant writer with an excellent voice and great world building. I thoroughly enjoyed the Paper Magician.” ―Brandon Sanderson, author of Mistborn and The Way of Kings

Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined―animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner―a practitioner of dark, flesh magic―invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart―and reveal the very soul of the man.

From the imaginative mind of debut author Charlie N. Holmberg, The Paper Magician is an extraordinary adventure both dark and whimsical that will delight readers of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Charlie N. Holmberg does a fantastic job of making her characters interesting and complex...The Paper Magician is my kind of story. I love anything set in England, especially historical England, and the pace of the story, while incredibly fast, cuts to the point and leaves plenty of room and questions-left-unanswered for a sequel. I appreciated that it didn’t end as a typical fluffy romance, but had an interesting twist and what I felt was a lot of delicious tension. Plus, the cover’s awesome.” ―Devin Brooks, The Figmentist

“Harry Potter fans will likely enjoy this story for its glimpses of another structured magical world, and fans of Erin Morgenstern’s
The Night Circus will enjoy the whimsical romance element. The ease of read makes this a quick getaway when compared to something complex in terms of language like Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. So if you’re looking for a story with some unique magic, romantic gestures, and the inherent darkness that accompanies power all steeped in a yet to be fully explored magical world, then this could be your next read.” ―Amanda Lowery, Thinking Out Loud

“Ceony displays commendable pluck facing a more experienced mage trained in the dark arts, and Holmberg gives her a complete story while leaving ample room for sequels…This promising debut recalls the early work of Patricia Wrede.”
Publishers Weekly

“A fast-paced, perilous romp…The story was the perfect tempo and I immediately fell in love with Ceony, her astute mind and quick thinking. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!”
CheriePie’s Book Reviews

“Stephen King once said, ‘Love is a uniquely portable magic,’ and if so,
The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg must be a kind of love...If you can take yourself out of the real world for a little while and imagine yourself as one learning how to be a magician, this novel will easily become one of your favorites. With a little bit of magic, romance, and suspense, The Paper Magician is truly a fun and exciting summer read for anyone who needs a break from the real world.” The Triangle

“The plot is pretty tightly focused on Ceony and Emery, but the glimpses I caught of this larger world were fascinating...If you enjoy fantasy or steampunk at all, give this one a try.”

Review - The Paper Magician
Initial ThoughtsI picked this book up after I read Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg. The premise sounded right up my alley and I love her writing style. Some Things I LikedQuirky friends to almost lovers romance. I’ll be honest, the romance here wasn’t really romance but rather mutual respect that grew between teacher and student (despite their age difference). I really enjoyed the relationship between Ceony and Thane and can’t wait to see how that grows in future sequels.World building and magic. I also loved the concepts of the world building. I thought the idea of “paper magicians” and magic based around different materials was a fascinating idea and I can’t wait to read more about the other types of magic. One Thing I Wasn’t Crazy AboutUnbelievable plot. Despite being a fantasy story, I found several moments in the story where, Ceony in particular, made absolutely outlandish decisions. I couldn’t understand how certain events led from one to the next. I found the plot had holes that I couldn’t fill as a reader which was a bit of a disappointment.Series ValueWhile there were some plot holes, overall, I enjoyed this book and I am definitely going to keep reading this series. I already have the next two books and plan to read them this month.I am also already a fan of Charlie N. Holmberg’s writing. I want to read all of the books she’s released.Final ThoughtsI liked this book a lot. I can see its flaws, but overall, I am incredibly intrigued by the concepts described here and I want to keep reading.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Recommendations for Further ReadingThe Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith – if you enjoy historical fantasy, wit, and magic, look no further than this series. It’s a perfect fall read to cozy up with.Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg – if you enjoyed the writing style here and are looking for something with a slightly older main character, try this new duology.

    Notes of Interest:

This book interested me because of its genre elements. It looked and sounded like something steampunkish in setting, but with plot emphasis on magic. It ended up being more neo-Victorian than steampunk, but it does have steampunk elements. To me, the differences are that neo-Victorian is more about an alternate history for the Victorian time period, while steampunk focuses on science fiction from a historical perspective. They are often interwoven, but fantasy prioritizes magic, whereas science fiction priorities machines. This book is the former. But the magic takes place within an scientifically invented magical system. For example, the paper glider is engineered. The excisioner must know anatomy like a doctor. Plastics, rubber, and glass are separate magics, too. And when I realized the magic of this world was set up based on man-made elements, that in itself was the selling point for me. I think it's a unique, refreshing concept to say magic comes only from man-made items, rather than natural elements. So, it's an unusual concept to think that paper or human tissue might contain magic because man creates them, but earth, water, air, and fire do not because man has no influence there.

What could have made it better for me:

I'm pleased to say this is one of those books I feel is perfect just the way it is. There were no technical distractions pulling me out of the story. The characters are well-developed as you get to know them. The plot is an easy-to-follow mix of alternate history, ingenuity, magic and fantasy, romance, and horror, all of which I love.

    What I liked about it:

I've already mentioned its unique use of man-made items for the foundation of magic as its main selling point for me. Though this book focused on only two types of magic — paper and excisioner — I'm very interested to see how other magics are handled. And that alone is enough to make me want to delve into book two, never mind the characters or plots. Paper magic is basically origami combined with magic skills learned at a college. Excisioner magic is anatomical necromancy. So, I imagine the other magics mentioned could involve manipulation of machinery and technology.

The imaginative details on how paper folding could be used in unexpected ways was pleasantly surprising. The author was right to choose it as a medium that the main character, Ceony, would underestimate, but then gradually become fascinated with and learn to appreciate its potential the more she masters it. So we see her grow in knowledge and skills as a magician as she advances in her craft. And it isn't a boring progression with burdensome details, like many books that detail the magics in their worlds, because of the creative ways in which the spells are learned and used.
Ceony's apprenticeship intertwines with Mg. Thane's background and current troubles to provide the challenges to employ what she learned in order to save her teacher and prevent magic from being misused for harm.

Her journey through Mg. Thane's heart has a lot of symbolic, nostalgic themes, but by contrast also delves into a surreal and horror-filled scope of a hunt for a magician who seeks to control and harm other people. So, while the story starts with a bit of a Mary Poppins feel, it ends up feeling more like something akin to Messrs Jekyll and Hyde.

The relationship between Ceony and Mg. Thane also hints of Jane Austin a bit, though their characters are revealed to the reader, and each other, through learning to appreciate someone based on what you learn about them, rather than over a course of frequent interaction. I'm sure the second book picks up more on the interaction of the relationship. But "listening" to someone's heart to understand what makes him tick is just as important as "speaking" to it. I guess you could say Mg. Thane's heart is the figurative "clockwork" aspect of this story, and Ceony must try to figure out what happened to it before she can save it or fix it.

    Recommendation:

If you enjoy the aforementioned genres, I think you'll like this book. It was a quick, clean read with a lot of potential for branching out in the series. I look forward to reading the second book.

I have a definite preference for "hard" fiction, particular sci-fi or fantasy. I tend to prefer well-developed worlds, and I am stickler for tone and consistency. I will admit that I have limited experience reading novels with teenage girls as their protagonists, but I picked this book up as part of the Kindle First program. I don't think this something I would have ever picked up off the shelf of my local bookstore, but I'm glad I took a chance on it.

I was pretty sure after just the first few pages that I was going to hate The Paper Magician. It seemed too cutesy and "soft." And some reviewers definitely found it that way. I think the criticism that maybe it is more akin to a YA title than an adult fiction is fair. As are the criticism that the character can seem one-dimensional, that the writing style often feels too modern given the Victorian-ish setting, and that the magic system, while novel, seems under developed.

Yet, even mindful of those criticisms, I felt like the author still managed to write a relatively captivating story. There are no "sneaky twists," no attempts to out-clever the reader, and no heavy-handed or ham-fisted narratives.

To me, the novel feels like an experiment. It feels like the author is defining the contours of a world and slowly peopling it with characters. Taken as an experiments, it definitely has it fits and starts, but I think it succeeded overall. Some of the descriptions are overly long and in other cases they are insufficient (I still do not have a satisfying mental image of the origami butler), but the overall writing style is punchy enough to keep things moving.

I also understand that some people found the overall arc of the story "improbable." I personally have a little difficulty with that criticism. It seems abundantly clear that the story here is a metaphor from the transition from selfishness to the selflessness through love, and it only makes sense that the heroine would accomplish something spectacular in the climax. Expecting an "ordinary resolution" in a book about a teenager learning to magically fold paper in Victorian London seems a little unrealistic.

In sum, this book has it's flaws. But I found it overall to be captivating and it certainly did not overstay it's welcome. It's an easy read for people who are open to an author who is trying different things and finding a narrative voice.

Oh, where to start? I bought this book twice - on Kindle and then Paperback - because I LOVE IT SO MUCH!

Ceony Twill is feisty and smart and I love her. The magic system is so beautifully written and imaginative. I wonderful twist on fantasy expectations. the chemistry between Ceony and Emery is fantastic and I was genuinely swept along through the story. I've never taken more than 48 hours to finish it.

Please ignore the criticisms about Americanisms coming into a Victorian England setting. A) This is fantasy. Who cares? and B) I did not even notice these things until brought up in reviews, and actually I read many of them as being appropriate references for the language at the time - it's British English that has changed in the last 150 years, not American English, in some of these cases.

If you like a story with magic, romance, a fantastical world you can escape to for a few days, and good pacing, The Paper Magician ticks all the boxes. It has a very special place in my heart ;)

Set in an interesting universe, where magic is neatly linked to man-made materials, it tells the tale of an young woman reluctantly initiating apprenticeship under a magician working with... paper.

Because magical origamis aren't as glamorous as enchanted steel, are they? Wrong. There are hidden depths and whole reams of resourcefulness behind a sheet of paper.

    Caution, mild spoilers ahead.

"But she still had time. Surely she still had time. Stories like this one weren’t meant to end badly."

I went into the book waiting to be disappointed, waiting for the magic of a good story to fade. But it didn’t.

The reviews and the ratings were not ravishing and this book migrated between my shelves of to-read and not to-read for some time. I had doubts, but the synopsis and the cover were so promising. I hoped that my judgment of the book by its cover (even though no one should ever do it, but we all do it anyway) would not fail me and it didn’t.

Yes, it had flaws. Yes, sometimes the details were too brisk. Yes, the story was sometimes confusing.

But I loved it. The Paper Magician surprised me with a new kind of story, taken out of the typical perimeter set for the YA novels, bound to be about romance, strong almost omnipotent protagonist and the events swirling all around her. Instead, the book has a unique world constructed around magicians bound to the elements. Ceony has hers chosen for her and it is paper. For the next few years, she will spend her time as an apprentice with a paper magician named Emery Thane. What a useless material paper must be, you may say. But no, as Holmberg shows us it is not exactly the case. With its own limits, paper can save Emery and that is what Ceony is determined to do.

The main romance line is foreseeable after about 30% of the book, but it is lacking. There were some hints dropped here and there and the vision at the end of the book promises a good deal, but there is no actual romance in this book, nothing that would make your heart swell with emotion.

Even though the scenery is ever-changing, the descriptions give enough detail to immerse you in the world lived by Ceony even if it is hidden in another man’s heart.

As many reviews had said there is a bit of a discrepancy with the setting. The book is set somewhere between the Victorian era and the modern times, but Ceony speaks as if she was living in the present days with expressions that weren’t present in those times. It didn’t bother me, but if you love your historical-fiction right to the tiniest facts than this will be a constant annoyance for you.

The protagonist herself was a rich character, with her own troubles, mistakes, guilt and hidden powers that surprised me and made Ceony all the more likable and strong. She has her own kind of humor and ways of saying things that make her stand out as a strong protagonist. Contrary to her, the antagonist in lacking in compelling traits. It seems as if the Excisioner only does things because she wants to, there is no plan, only determination to give revenge.

But in some ways, the story was more about Thane than about Ceony. Holmberg revealed more secrets about the magician than about his apprentice and it was told in an unusual way, through the memories, hopes and fears, rather than through dialogs and monotonous recollections.

I had some questions through the book, for some things I consider almost plot-holes. But it didn’t bother me for too long for the narrative was light and addictive.

The next two books will tell if the whole series is worth reading or not.
