Review
“A psychological thriller perfect for fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. 13 Minutes takes a haunting look at the dark side of teenage friendships…Pinborough’s sharp prose drives the novel through a series of incredible twists and turns. Just when readers think they’ve got it all figured out, she pulls the rug out from under them…This book will appeal to adults of all ages.”
―BookPage
"Readers drawn to the kind of debauched chicanery made popular in novels such as Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl will tear through this edgy thriller.” ―Booklist
“Pinborough’s thrilling murder mystery is filled with twists and turns... But at its most basic level, this is a story of petty high school betrayals, popularity contests with toxic frenemies, and vividly depicted peer pressure, all of which combine to create a painfully real novel.”
―Publishers Weekly
“13 Minutes is an undeniable page-turner, but don't turn too quickly or you'll risk missing Pinborough's crackling language and nuanced depiction of the thrill―and terror―of adolescent friendships.” ―Tara Altebrando, author of The Leaving and The Possible
"Darkly fascinating…Red herrings lead to a satisfying conclusion.” ―Kirkus
“An intricately plotted, fast-paced crime story...Mean Girls meets Donna Tartt's The Secret History for the Instagram age.” ―The Times (London)
"Juicy and involving…Sociopathic and garden-variety mean girls, unreliable narration, sexy bits, over-the-top cruelty, and tragic consequences combine here to please many thriller readers."
―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
“Sophisticated and twisty enough to please adults of all ages.” ―The Irish Times
“Masterfully crafted…The book’s evocation of the dark world of school, with all its petty betrayals, casual cruelties and toxic friendships, is painfully spot on.” ―The Telegraph
“Perspective is everything in this clever tale.” ―Financial Times
“An unsettling psychological thriller, the book plunges you into the frankly scary world of teenage girls.” ―Fabulous, Sun on Sunday
”Many, many thrillers have been compared to Gillian Flynn’s 2012 bestseller Gone Girl, but Sarah Pinborough’s masterfully crafted YA novel 13 Minutes might be one of the few to actually merit the comparison. The book’s evocation of the dark world of school, with all its petty betrayals, casual cruelties and toxic friendships, is painfully spot on.” ―The Telegraph

This novel is a murder mystery that involves teens, social media and bullying. On the surface it is the story of Natasha a teen who is found in the river, brought back from the brink of death no memory of the events before she died for 13 minutes.
There is a cast of friends and frenemies who are involved. Being a modern tale of murder and teenage women alot of the story unfolds in text, social media and the like. Pinborough does an excellent job of using the different media to unfold the story. This is similar to the technique Stephen King made famous in his first novel Carrie. The POV switches are jarring at times sometimes feeling random but they are not at all random. Pinborough places the POV changes intentionally to drive the story and she is always in control.
This novel about teenage women in England feels correct but of course how do I know what those teens think like. that is important because the the motivations and the narrative drive are so closely tied to Becca an old friend of Natasha (the victim) and her group of friends who embrace the name "the Barbies" for their social circle.
The ending is not as jaw dropping as Pinbrough's next book Behind Her Eyes but that is OK not every ending has to be a stunner. it is just as good a feeling when the end of a book can get you to raise your eyebrow and say 'Huh.' I think this ending does a little more of that. 13 minutes has alot to say about the world teenagers live in, and one that i think would be good for young women to read even if some moments are intense. Adults have good reason to read it as well as a tiny window into the pressures of the cool kids at school in this modern world.
The murder, or attempted murder in this case is a Mcguffin that sets the wheels in motion. 13 minutes is an exploration of modern teenage social dynamic and in that sense it is a much deeper novel then it appears on the surface. Like I said at the start of this review this is probably my least favorite Sarah Pinborugh novel that I have read so far, that is not a insult by any means. The Dog Faced Gods trilogy is my favorite horror trilogy, Behind Her Eyes is a masterpiece and mayhem and Murder were excellent examples of an author stretching out of her comfort zone(by writing a period piece). So You know what 13 minutes is a great read and one you should check out...after Behind Her eyes if you are a thriller type.
Worth the time spent though.
Why are her characters always on drugs??

I am usually pretty good at spotting the traps authors lay here and there to mislead their readers but this time I fell into each and everyone of them. Sarah Pinborough had me totally fooled (once again...!), and she did it in a very clever way...!
Young adult/adult/middle-aged/elderly... no matter how you define yourself: give this thriller a shot! You won't regret it.
As always, I will do my best not to give any spoilers away!
The premise of the story is betrayal and revenge mixed together with the teenage angst we've all been through at one point or another. It focuses on Rebecca Crisp and her ex-best friend, Natasha, who is the social group leader of who are deemed "the Barbies" - we all know the type; the slim, blonde, athletic "popular" girls. Natasha was found in the river and died for 13 minutes. When she was resuscitated, she had no memory of the events leading up to her being in the river and so turns to her former best friend to help her work out what happened.
This is a fantastically written piece of work, with the story being told from multiple points of view, as well as 1st person in the form of extracts from journals. Several of the chapters are also in the form of text message conversations, which I feel really adds to the narrative given the ages of the key characters and also extracts from police reports, doctor’s notes and newspaper stories.
The characters themselves are very well defined and, to me, really define the typical mix of personas you'd find in a sixth form in the UK (not that I was in sixth form for very long!); the self-absorbed 'popular' types, the shy unnoticeable types, the just on the edge of the 'norm' types to name a few. It really did take me back to the end of my school days, being able to form the images of the settings quite clearly in my mind’s eye.
The story really plays on the fears and manipulations that people have, and just how far someone would go to be part of the “in” crowd.
There are plenty of twists and turns in the writing and I found myself having a few "ahhh, that's why she said it like that" moments as the plot thickened and the story unfolded.
In short, this an amazingly formed story that kept me up half the night because I wanted to read 'just one more chapter'. The story grabbed me and wouldn't let go, most definitely a read to consider!
