In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical “auto-mail” limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his and his brother’s bodies...the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.
With all the pieces now in his possession, the homunculus "father" executes his master plan as Edward and the others watch in horror. When the dust settles, the entire world has been reshaped. With the help of Hohenheim, the Elric brothers lauch a desperate final attack, but is it all too late...?

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2018Fullmetal Alchemist was the first manga I ever read, and all these years later, it's still one of my favorites. I really like how it overall has an optimistic tone, without downplaying the trials and pain that the characters endure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even when the bad guys "win", it's terrific
Here I go a'spoilering. That's yer warning.
Our five "human sacrifices" (Mustang, Izumi, Hohenheim, Al and Ed) are all exactly where Father meant for them to be within minutes of the solar eclipse. May Chang has also interrupted the party, and she intends to take down Father herself in order to obtain immortality (the whole reason she came to Amestris all those chapters ago). Ed and Al start fighting Pride, but when May is thrown across the room by Father, Ed tells Al to help the Xingese girl. Izumi also tries to attack Father, but he pins each of his sacrifices down when the eclipse starts, and somehow opens their individual Gates. Seems he means to open the Gate of the world, and by having five uber-alchemists, he can do it.
Greed defends the Briggs group for a bit, but also arrives underground hoping to take the benefits of Father's scheme for himself. Meanwhile, beneath Central Command but above Father's lair, Wrath is facing off against Scar, two nameless men who are both extremely tough warriors.
Some characters meet their end in this volume, and Father makes himself a new body that is like a young, ripped Hohenheim. Just keep in mind he's evil while you're drooling. Annnyway, Hohenheim reveals that he had a counter measure just in case Father succeeded in attaining "godhood", and manages to undo a lot of the damage Father did at the moment of the eclipse. But Father goes to the ground level to try to snack on souls up above, and just as Ed reaches the top, unleashes an enormous explosion.
This volume covers chapters 104 to 106, and finishes by promising to say "farewell" to the Fullmetal Alchemist. And they mean it... after the next manga volume, the story of Fullmetal will be done.
