The Instant New York Times Bestseller! Kim Liggett's The Grace Year is a speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power.

Survive the year.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life―a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism,
The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

“A visceral, darkly haunting fever dream of a novel and an absolute page-turner.” – Libba Bray,

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—At the age of 16, all girls are banished so that they can release their magic, which "lures men from their beds, makes boys lose their minds, and drives the wives mad with jealousy." Before they are sent away, the chosen girls are given a veil signifying that they will be married when—and if—they return. Tierney dreads this "grace year." She has no desire to be married. She has seen the condition of the girls who return. She has no fear of the menial labor she will be assigned if not chosen as a bride. She does receive an unwanted veil and leaves with the rest of the girls and the guards who are to protect them from the poachers who will kill them, dissect them, and sell what's left of them back to the settlement as medicine. The poachers are dangerous, but so are the dynamics of the girls themselves as they fight one another and struggle to survive. This dark tale, often reminiscent of William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, is both disturbing and uplifting. The cruelty shown by self-appointed leader Kiersten contrasts starkly with Tierney's desire to maintain peace and keep everyone alive. When Tierney is forced out of the encampment and must survive on her own, her resourcefulness proves that magic is not all that they were told it was. While main characters are well drawn, minor characters lack real development. The plot, often harsh and violent, builds to a surprising conclusion, a paean to feminism in some respects. VERDICT This is a novel that will appeal to those who like dark stories with fairy-tale elements; highly recommended as a book group discussion choice.—Janet Hilbun, University of North Texas, Denton

Review

"Liggett's immersive storytelling effortlessly weaves horror elements with a harrowing and surprising survival story. Profound moments lie in small details, and readers' hearts will race and break right along with the brave, capable Tierney's. The biggest changes often begin with the smallest rebellions, and the emotional conclusion will resonate. Chilling, poignant, haunting, and unfortunately, all too timely." -- Kirkus (Starred Review)

"Beautiful, devastating, and deeply moving, THE GRACE YEAR is a testament to the power of finding your voice and speaking your truth. This story of hope and resistance reminds us of what authoritarians and strongmen throughout history have always feared--that a single light in the darkness calls all other lights to shine, that a lone whisper can give rise to a thundering chorus. This haunting, lyrical book is required reading, full stop." -- Samira Ahmed,
New York Times Bestselling author of Internment and Love, Hate & Other Filters

"A visceral, darkly haunting fever dream of a novel and an absolute page-turner. Liggett's deeply suspenseful book brilliantly explores the high cost of a misogynistic world that denies women power and does it with a heart-in-your-throat, action-driven story that's equal parts horror-laden fairy tale, survival story, romance, and resistance manifesto. I couldn't stop reading." -- Libba Bray,
New York Times bestselling author of The Diviners and A Great and Terrible Beauty

"A dark fairy tale of a book that speaks to the time that we live in." -- Kelly Link, author of
Get In Trouble

"
The Grace Year seethes with love and brutality, violence and hope. It is a remarkable and timely story of the bonds between women, the cost of breaking those bonds, and the courage it takes to defy a patriarchy intent on crushing feminine strength. Everyone should read this book." --Sabaa Tahir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in the Ashes

"
The Grace Year is a book for every woman who has ever screamed at the top of her lungs and still felt like no one heard her. A book for every person who has ever been made to feel small or less than. A book for all of us who have been told to sit down and be silent, to grin and bear. Tierney's captivating story reminded me that sometimes existing is itself an act of bravery--and this book's existence is an act of courage that I'm very grateful for. Brutally smart, devastatingly lyrical, and so capital i-Important, I want everyone to read this book!" -- Jasmine Warga, internationally bestselling author of My Heart and Other Black Holes and Other Words for Home

"It is a top ten book of the year for sure and maybe the best YA novel this year. If you like
The Handmaid's Tale and Vox, this book is for you." -- Red Carpet Crash

The Grace Year by Kim LiggettYes. It’s a yes, you guys. And I’m going to tell you why. It’s Hunger Games (but all girls)meets (what I’ve been told about) A Handmaids Tale. The Grace Year Girls are sent off to demented summer camp when they reach marrying age to rid them of their magic so the men can more easily control them. If they manage to make it home, they’re often missing, at the very least a finger and dealing with some ptsd. But at least they got their man! Oh. And no one is allowed to talk about it. Yup. Just like Fight Club. Our main gal, Tierney, just wants everyone to get along and act like normal humans, but as you can probably imagine, there are snags. As always, I recommend you go in blind. I saw the pretty pink cover and assumed it was a romance. Imagine my surprise when I realized that red in her hair.. that’s blood.Happy reading!!

I think I read this book in under 24 hours while being a half decent mom of five. So much to unpack in this book. Well written. It’s like Kim grabbed my face with both hands and said, “look at this!” I’m not going to lie, there was an uncomfortableness to the story, and sometimes books like that are really difficult for me to get through. If you relate, keep at it. This book is poignant for our time. I think this would be a fantastic book club book, but be warned it deals with sexual content. Prim blue stocking type readers may need the smelling salts!!

It was an incredibly beautiful story, everyone saying its hunger games meets hand.maids tale is spot on. I wanted to love it but it was only a solid like for me. I just felt like it could've been so much more but again it was a solid book just not a love and I'm sad about that.

I have no idea why everyone isn’t reading this book and RAVING about it!
From the first few sentences I was hooked!
The Grace Year is all about survival, justice, and change through finding what real love is all about. I don’t even know if you can call what happens plot twists, but the changes in the storyline…HOLY MOLY.
I loved it!

Somethings were a bit predictable and the pace a little off in some parts but other than that it was a great read. It had me captivated from beginning to end. It was hard to put done and left me wanting more. I would definitely recommend it.

This book was so amazing and nothing like I expected in the best way. You have to read it to know but the characters and plot and romance involved it will keep you at the edge of your seat the entire time.

This one is hard to review.

What a powerful novel and a terrifying look at the dynamics of women and how we are so often our own worst enemies, pitted against one another.

It was a depressing book, truthfully. But I couldn’t put it down. Sometimes the hardest things are the most necessary.

I have to admit, I was initially skeptical. But in the end was blown away. Great read. Hope there’s a part two and a screen adaption coming…

This book deserves all of the stars!! I absolutely loved everything about it and it will forever hold a piece of my heart. It has now got a spot in my top 3 books of the year (The Nightingale and All My Mothers are the other two)

It’s feminist dystopian fiction, which isn’t something I thought I’d enjoy but it is an amazing page turner from the very first, to last page! If you think of The Handmaids Tale and The Hunger Games this book sits somewhere in between.

I adored Tierney she was a fantastic protagonist who seemed so much older than her years. She is well known in the county as being a rebel who never wants to follow suit. This ultimately doesn’t do her any favours when entering the encampment, but it makes for a fabulous story.

The storytelling is exquisite yet brutal, there are a few twists and turns along the way that really add to the plot. The main characters are brilliantly written, there was a ‘bad gal’ thrown in for good measure who you’ll love to hate.

The ending was everything I had hoped it would be, and more! As you can probably tell I adored this book and I think everyone should read it - I’ve already sent copies to two of my friends, who I hope love it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Reviewed in India on September 18, 2021
I’ve seen it compared to the hunger games but it is not like that, it’s much more brutal and hopeless. Usually I can get a book out of head pretty quickly even if it’s particularly a difficult one. But this one gave me late night anxiety, why do I feel helpless when I think about this. Is it the realisation that any kind of change is slow? That it requires lot more sacrifices than it’s fair? How do you know how much is a fair sacrifice? And how do you calculate the price? Why is it so gut clenchingly painful read about stuff that women actually go through in one way or the other? I seem to have lot of questions and no answers, i guess that what kept me awake at 3 am. The voice inside me is so loud I couldn’t sleep, so i start to write this knowing that it’s gonna be an angst filled confrontational monologue. As long as I’m asking questions, Why is it not realistic to want change sooner?
To all the women who carry a red wild flower in their hearts .
