From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Caden is a spy. He's spent most of his life so far in an underground facility being groomed physically and mentally to become a Love Interest for someone influential. Now he's finally been chosen. Caden's been pegged as a Nice, the nerdy-boy-next-door type with perfect abs and ocean blue eyes. His competition is Dylan, a dark-souled Bad who's the dreamiest boy Caden's ever seen. Each of them must pursue Juliet, a girl destined to be the next great scientific mind. Whoever wins will share Juliet's secrets with the Love Interest Compound, which will then sell them to the highest bidder. Whoever loses dies. Caden doesn't intend to lose—but no one prepared him for the way Dyl makes him feel. The narrative is told entirely from Caden's perspective, and it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between what's actually going on and Caden's assumptions. This might be overlooked if the story had a lot less exposition. Still, fans of spy fiction and LGBTQ titles will find the novel worth reading. VERDICT A serviceable addition that might appeal to fans of Andrew Smith's Grasshopper Jungle and Ally Carter's books.—Kaitlin Frick, New York Public Library

A 2018 ALA Rainbow List Selection

"Dietrich both flips and examines certain stereotypes in regards to gender and sexuality while also serving up some high stakes spy adventures."--Entertainment Weekly

"
This sci-fi young adult novel is the answer to all of our cliché love triangle woes. Caden, the kindhearted boy-next-door, and Dylan, a brooding bad boy complete with dark poetry and a leather jacket, are in competition for the genius Juliet’s heart. The winner gets the girl, and gets to live out his life in peace. If you’re looking for something funny, action-packed, and romantic this summer, then this is your next read."--PBS Newshour

"
There’s a Hunger Games vibe here to be sure―a deadly teen-on-teen competition―and this is packed with similar questions of morality. High stakes, well-developed characters, and an LGBTQ slant on the classic spy story make it all the more intriguing. Stock up―this one has something for everyone."-- Booklist, starred review

"In this subversive take on the quintessential YA love triangle, two guys―the clean-cut boy next door and the brooding bad boy―compete for a girl’s affections. But nothing is as it seems: the guys are actually secret agents, trained to follow a script and fulfill specific romantic roles, and whoever doesn’t win his target’s love will be killed by his ruthless employer. ... Dietrich’s debut is impressive, provocative, and a clever take on well-worn romantic tropes. ... while the thriller elements add tension and numerous surprises."--Publishers Weekly

A great satire with heart

A great satire with heart
This book far exceeded my expectations. I’ve see blazing reviews and some flaming ones, and after reading the blurb, I was definitely interested, but didn’t have lofty predictions. Some parts of the book are cheesy, some ironic, but I didn’t expect the subtext of hopeless desperation through most of the novel. I was in tears more than once because of the helplessness that the characters faced, but still managed to have hope. It was heartbreaking.‘The Love Interest’ does a great job of presenting stereotypes and tropes and throwing them into the harsh light of day to show that they really don’t exist. The characters have layers and motivations and aren’t simply the label that has been given to them.Caden is a fun protagonist. He is determined, a little stubborn, but compassionate. It was a great mix, and I was relieved that even with the fact that he is the protagonist – he also is not. That he is not ‘the chosen one’ or ‘the solo hero of the world.’ It takes a team – and you get a strong sense of that.Dylan (‘Dyl’) kept surprising me… and for all the right reasons. I think he is my favourite character from this story. We never truly know his motivations because the novel is told only from Caden’s perspective, and this narrative adds delicious tension – as it does between all the cast – for each are pretending, hiding secrets, tenuous with trust. As hard as it was to peg Dylan, he also felt the most genuine. Our female love interest, and target of the boy spies, Juliet fell a bit flat for me. She has skills and towards the second half of the book really shines; but during the first half felt more like a prop to tell Caden and Dyl’s story.I think the only thing holding me back from giving this a perfect score is that I would have loved to see more complexity in the female characters, and maybe a bit more angst develop between the Caden and Dyl. But that’s me being picky, because I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Love Interest.’There are a number of plot twists and events that I did not see coming. I was literally questioning “What?” out loud and re-reading the paragraph. It’s been a while since a book had done that to me, so I have to applaud Cale Dietrich in causing me alarm. Brilliant!I think the reason behind such polarising reviews is because on the subtext of irony – on the surface it’s a love triangle, Dyl and Caden are gorgeous teens, parentless, and forced into becoming spies for a corporation – it’s very YA. But underlying that plot, the narrative flies in the face of all those tropes. Right up to the last page. It is amusing, touching and poignant.Dietrich’s writing style is effortless, I read the book in one sitting, fully engaged the entire was through. I did have a slight pet peeve of the boys calling each other ‘man’ in their dialogue with frequency – like when girls get called ‘babe’ or ‘baby,’ it’s just something I find irritating. But that’s my personal problem and didn’t disrupt my enjoyment of ‘The Love Interest.’The overall plot is, for the most part, easily predictable. However, Deitrich crafts angst beautifully, teasing you over and over again driving the story forward with a thrilling pace. I was also honestly surprised at the amount of action and James Bond styled gadgets. So while guessing the end was easy – the journey to get there is filled with surprises, laughter, tears, and hot bodies.Although having a gay protagonist is not anything ground-breaking, it felt genius in this context. It was also dealt with in a respectful manner, and in a way anyone coming to terms with their sexuality should be treated. There was no fear or discrimination against their orientation, and it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy. I was really invested in the boys pairing up.I was a little ‘iffy’ on the world building, and the relevancy for the organisation – and indeed the use of agents like Caden and Dyl. It is all so much overkill. But that too is a sarcastic pun at YA tropes. So you can either take it literally, of view it in the tone it is written, dripping with derision and satire.Definitely giving ‘The Love Interest’ two thumbs up, and recommend this to all my friends. It’s a great adventure with tones of love and irony.

Caden is a Nice; Dylan is a Bad. They are competing to the death for the love of Juliet, a young woman caught between them. The loser faces an agonizing defeat while the winner gains his right to live.

This book is refreshing, lively, and mostly succeeds at breaking stereotypes. I really enjoyed the examination of the young adult love triangle in a new light. So many people blame Twilight for the popular trope but clearly it's been around longer than that. The concept is as old as literature itself. Jacob/Rachel/Leah, a crushing young adult love triangle, is in the Bible. Wuthering Heights took young adult love triangles to a crazy place, Gone With the Wind (who can forget adolescent Scarlett pining for Ashley while Rhett looks on)... Les Misérables (poor teenage, naive Eponine). Enough examples. The point is that the concept of exploring young love in this way is as old as our earliest written stories known to man. I absolutely love that Cale Dietrich really took this story and invented a new variation and examination that feels fresh and exciting.

If you are a romantic, a sucker for a fulfilling ending, crave forbidden romance, and love young adult literature... this book is for you! It's a page-turning, exciting, interesting read with likable characters. I loved how clever Caden is, how sweet Dylan is. Their very personalities break the barriers of the roles they've been placed in, making the book twisty and fun. Juliet and the other characters are all equally enjoyable to spend time with. The book was mostly faultless looked at from the perspectives above... love triangle young adult romance.

The largest issue with the book is the Organization behind all of this. There is no actual hope for either winner or loser. Obviously the loser faces death, which makes me wonder why the easy answer for most competitors isn't just to kill off your competition—especially if it's staged to further win the hand of the prize. Though the winner isn't really looking forward to much either. Once you "win" you don't gain freedom or life. You're destined to continually work for this organization forever, always at the threat of death or mind-erasing if you eventually lose your love or don't agree to live as a spy everyday, basically betraying your partner every moment you live with them. Doesn't sound very ideal. So makes me wonder why there hasn't been a rebellion or why anyone would want this life. All of this is presented in the first couples of chapters, so no spoilers here.

Overall, this is a book worth reading. It would make for great discussion for young readers. I think any age group could enjoy this one however. It's full of tantalizing interactions that had me racing to turn pages and lots of twists and turns. Get this book to find out what happens to Caden, Dylan, and Juliet!

Two boys who are supposed to fight over a girl end up falling for one another instead? And they’re spies, too? Count me in. This sounds like it will be one of the most interesting and fresh pieces of YA LGBTQ+ literature out there right now.

Was it? Depends on the reader, to be honest. For me, I can say this book didn’t meet my expectations, but I still really enjoyed what it achieved and also what it tried to achieve.

As a parody, The Love Interest works, but only to a certain extent. During the first half of the book, I felt as if there were more instances in which the author explored and exposed YA tropes we’ve come to expect and accept in YA literature. For example, the boys are told how and what to do (like purposefully bump into the girl in the hall at school) by their coaches through earpieces. The second half of the book, however, especially the ending, seems to forget itself and doesn’t contain as much ironic or sarcastic content as before. I enjoy a good bit of satire, and while Dietrich makes a great effort in integrating satirical commentary on these YA clichés, his parodic structure does not hold from beginning to end.

The characters are caricatures of YA archetypes as Caden represents the good guy, Dylan the bad boy, and Juliet the girl caught between the two. I think it’s safe to say these characters are likable but not particularly memorable and are somewhat boring.

One thing I really appreciated, though, was Caden’s definitive lack of internal conflict over his sexual orientation. He knows he is gay and is completely comfortable with his preferences. He's quite sure of his identity and it was nice to see a YA protagonist who has a strong sense of self. I also really enjoyed how the book is told from Caden’s perspective, however, I feel as if the story would have been much stronger if we had access to Dylan’s point of view as well. With his added voice, I believe the romance would have had more impact and would have been more meaningful for this particular same-sex relationship.

While I liked how Caden and Dylan formed a relationship by the end, I have to say that their romance left me wanting. The romance was a bit accelerated and blurred over by transitionary passages and dialogues to the point where their relationship was done in summation and didn’t feel sincere or fully developed. It felt controlled and slightly one-sided (but only because we only know how Caden feels).

The ending of the book felt rushed and disconnected from the first half of the story. The satirical spy concept evolved into a kids saving the world concept. It’s almost as if the author forgot his original parodic intentions and didn’t really know how to combine the satire with the spy action by the end the book. I won’t say the ending was bad, just that it didn’t fit with the overall tone of the story.

This book isn’t perfect, but it’s still pretty good. It started out with an intriguing concept that got bogged down by an uneventful chain of events that fell victim to the very tropes it made fun of (boy meets girl, boy tries to impress girl, romance happens, etc. etc.) The sections where Caden and Dylan actually spend time together are sweet and the satire (when present) is witty and the highlight of the book. It’s not the book I wanted, but it’s still an enjoyable read and a much needed addition to LGBTQ+ representation in YA books.

If you like Alex Rider this is the vibes I get from this book, it has I think around 37 pretty short Chapters, I finished the book in just a couple days so it's an easy read. The epilogue is cute tho, I wish there wasn't such a time skip and hard more information. I feel like the author kind of gave up or lost interest at the end of the book. Still a good read though.

OH MY GOSH WHY DID I NOT READ THIS SOONER?!

This concept is so cool haha I love that it is really cliche (love triangle bad boy x perfect girl x boy next door) but actually even on purpose, it’s making fun of the cliche and adding in these crazy things like corrupt compagnies, fighting for your life by Convincing someone that you’re “the one” and then the major weakness of mine Aajsbjssn hahah Caden falls in love... with a guy.... the guy he’s competing with for the same girl... for his life. Since whoever gets the girl to fall in love with them lives... the other dies.

And OMG you guys this book was just a major brain fck these two “spies” that keep lying and deceiving and you don’t know what to believe anymore aaaahhhhh
I mean it! Plot twists!!

Also it’s just super easy to read I love the writing style and the fact that it’s only from cadens point of view makes it even better since you honestly don’t know what Dylan is thinking and wether his actions are genuine, or not.... and that anxiety is SOOO good and well build up and spread throughout the book that it makes up for the fact that it’s whole plot is basically “two guys fighting for 1 girl, one bad boy and the boy next door 😂” amazing!

And honestly I was at first a bit annoyed by Juliette (and I really got some shatter me vibes hahaha not only the name but also the “preparing for war sentences and actions” but she turned out to be so funny and interesting! The fact that she’s really smart (hence target since TLI wants to control her) and she’s actually good at science and developing gadgets is cool! It’s a shame that there’s not really spend a lot of time to carve out her character, most of the information that you get about her is from TLI, the (corrupt) company. And then suddenly she’s making bombs ahhaha, but, it’s a nice development!

Really the deception and lies continue throughout the whole book and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole 373 pages! I really didn’t know what would happen and who would end up with who!

Awesome job Cale Didrich! I would definitely recommend it to everyone who loves cliches, love triangles, relationship drama, a good mystery in the sense of being kept in the dark 24/7 bc these boys are manipulating lying deceiving handsome bastards 😂, and ofc some anxiety, BL and action (cue car escape, explosions and a “stalker” super killermachine robot) out for blood)!

Although some parts felt rushed (especially the ending haha) and the plot didn’t always make sense for me it didn’t take away from the reading experience and it also on the other handig kinda made you just as nervous and rushed as the main character so while reading it! I didn’t really notice until well... it was suddenly over hahah. Man what a book!

"Wouldn't it be better to send us in when we're a bit older? No one finds the love of their life while they're a teenager."
"You haven't read any YA novels recently, have you?"

So say the characters in this deliciously meta book that pokes fun at so many YA tropes, while somehow still making you swoon over them.

Caden, a Nice, has to compete against Dyl, a Bad (complete with leather jacket and sob story to account for his jerky behaviour), to win the affections of their Chosen. The winner gets to spend the rest of his life at her side, spying on her. The loser gets incinerated.

To makes things worse, Caden is falling in love with his competition.

THE LOVE INTEREST is fast-paced and action-packed. It's sexy. It regularly says, "Oh by the way, I'm using Trope X right now" and makes you laugh because yeah, it totally is using that trope and you're totally swooning over it. I read most of it in a day because I couldn't put it down. This is definitely one you want to pick up.
