Betrayed: A Rosato & Associates Novel (A Rosato & DiNunzio Novel) Hardcover – November 25, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
Blockbuster author Lisa Scottoline returns to the Rosato & Associates law firm with Betrayed, and maverick lawyer Judy Carrier takes the lead in a case that's more personal than ever. Judy has always championed the underdog, so when Iris, the housekeeper and best friend of Judy's beloved Aunt Barb, is found dead of an apparent heart attack, Judy begins to suspect foul play. The circumstances of the death leave Judy with more questions than answers, and never before has murder struck so close to home.
In the meantime, Judy's own life roils with emotional and professional upheaval. She doesn't play well with her boss, Bennie Rosato, which jeopardizes her making partner at the firm. Not only that, her best friend Mary DiNunzio is planning a wedding, leaving Judy feeling left behind, as well as newly unhappy in her relationship with her live-in boyfriend Frank.
Judy sets her own drama aside and begins an investigation of Iris's murder, then discovers a shocking truth that confounds her expectations and leads her in a completely different direction. She finds herself plunged into a shadowy world of people who are so desperate that they cannot go to the police, and where others are so ruthless that they prey on vulnerability. Judy finds strength within herself to try to get justice for Iris and her aunt -- but it comes at a terrible price.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024Scottoline keeps on getting better and better and better! I can’t wait to start the next book in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2014Lisa Scottoline has morphed her long running successful Rosato & Associates series into Rosato & DiNunzio after Mary DiNunzio became a partner in the all female law firm. Mary and Judy Carrier are still greatest of friends but their friendship has been altered with Mary's elevation to partner. Carrier's professional relationship within the firm is disturbed when Bennie Rosato thrusts 75 cases of asbestos litigation on her shoulders which will take years process and are personally abhorrent to Judy.
Judy is going through a lot of personal stress with her long-standing relationship with Frank under strain, when she hears that her favourite Aunt Barb is fighting breast cancer and is about to have a double mastectomy. Barb introduces Judy to her best friend Iris Juarez, a Mexican illegal who helps Barb with her rose garden and works in appalling conditions at one of the local independent mushroom growing factories. Top marks to Lisa Scottoline for revealing the something about the lives of Mexican illegals in the USA.
A couple of days before Barb's operation she is shocked by Iris's death from an apparent heart attack at the wheel of her car. The police are convinced that it is accidental but Judy is suspicious, especially when she finds that Iris has hidden $50,000 in notes in various places around Barb's house. This leads Judy into a dangerous investigation of what looks like the proceeds of drug trafficking. At the same time she confronts some painful personal confrontations that unearth long-buried family secrets.
This story is more about Judy, her family and a personal quest for vengeance than the kind of legal thriller I expected where Scottoline really excels. It is a page-turner, carefully plotted with lots of, sometimes unbelievable, action as Judy is exposed to great personal danger. There are enough twists in the plot and the family circumstances to keep the reader absorbed.
On the last page Scottoline leaves us with a seed that should be a great theme for the next in the Rosato & DiNunzio series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024The law firm may belong to partners Bennie Rosato and Mary DiNunzio, but this is Judy Carrier’s story. Because Mary is now partnered with Bennie, Judy is now Mary’s employee. However, Bennie throws Judy a bone, which could be a career-maker. Bennie acquired 75 asbestos-liability cases from a New York law firm and gives them to Judy.
Judy is Mary’s best friend, dresses in non-matching clothes, and is the conscience of the practice. She doesn’t want the cases, not only because it will tie her up for a couple of years but also because her job will be bargaining down the amount of money that victims receive from insurance companies. If she had to work this case, she’d rather argue in favor of the victims. And, she’s got her hands full with a sex-discrimination case.
To top it off, Judy’s Aunt Barb has breast cancer and is facing mastectomy surgery. Although Judy and Aunt Barb love each other deeply, Aunt Barb refers to her housekeeper Iris Juarez as her best friend. In fact, Aunt Barb even attends the local Mexican church with Iris, and this makes Judy suspicious. It turns out that Iris is an illegal immigrant, as are most members of the church. But Father Keegan welcomes all to the church, and he’s got a younger priest to assist him. To complicate things a bit more, Judy’s mother insists on staying by Aunt Barb’s side. And Judy and her mom have the typical mother-daughter issues. Moreover, I haven’t mentioned her fiancé, an adolescent in a grown-man’s body who can’t be pulled away from his equally juvenile friends and televised sports games to help Judy with her many crises.
“Betrayed” (2014, 368 pages in hard cover) is the second volume in Scottoline’s Rosato and DiNunzio series, and guess what. Allegra, the 13-year-old genius, beekeeper, and Nancy-Drew-type sleuth from Accused (the debut novel in the series) is now an intern at Rosato and DiNunzio. So, it seems likely that Ms. Scottoline intends for this series to be read in order. I wonder if Allegra will show up in “Corrupted,” the third offering, which I have on order. As you may have noticed, the first three books begin with the first three letters of the alphabet, in order. The rest of the series follows suit, with Damaged, Exposed, and Feared.
Ms. Scottoline is probably known as much for her sense of humor as she is for weaving intricate and absorbing plots. But that’s not as evident in Betrayed as it is in other books that feature Mary DiNunzio where she can play with her own Italian-American background. But she’s introduced another element: Allegra. I’m fascinated with the possibilities of how this young girl will develop as the series proceeds. I can’t see her growing significantly older, and I can’t see her getting intimately involved at her age.
Maybe this will be her only repeat appearance. But, with Ms. Scottoline, you never know.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2015I've been reading the Bennie Rosato books since the very beginning of the series and was really excited that Scottoline was bringing Bennie back. The earlier books centered around Bennie always included smart and suspenseful courtroom scenes and showed Bennie's determination to set up her practice and the obstacles she encountered. These were intelligently written books. I don't know what's been happening with the last two Rosato & Associates novels. Scottoline brought back the practice but Bennie is hardly ever present. I really would like a Bennie story. Judy Carrier was supposedly a brilliant lawyer but I found her silly and unprofessional and the story incomprehensible. I'm glad many readers really liked the book but I don't know if I'll ever read one again unless the stories go back to being courtroom centered, suspenseful with a reasonably realistic plot.and sharply written. If I could, I would have given the book 2 1/2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book!
Really good novel, it kept me at the edge of my seat sometimes. I wanted to keep reading it. I just ordered the 3rd book o the series: CORRUPTED. Can't wait to start reading it. Lisa's style is descriptive, intriguing and catchy. I really like her effort to put real facts, mixed with her imagination. I like her doing lots of research in diverse fields to end up with a great story.

Ok, so it is chick lit. And a mystery novel. And contains mushroom farms (ever been downwind of one?), undocumented workers, cartels, good/bad cops,good/bad priests, and lawyers, of course. Shootouts, car bombs, etc. Now I do not normally read chick lit, but Scottoline is addictive and I love Philadelphia. So buy it already!
