Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this spectacular new series, Morgan, an acclaimed writer of historical and futuristic romances, turns her deft pen to the Christian market to reflect a personal change. Abigail Stanton, who recently lost her husband and child, moves to Culdee Creek to become a housekeeper for Conor MacKay, a man whose previous housekeepers warmed more than dinner. Abby makes it clear that she won't tolerate any disreputable advances on his part, but she feels God led her to this ranch and this family for a purpose. As she grows to love Conor and his daughter, her faith inspires Conor to believe that there might just be something to this idea of religion. This wonderful start is for all collections.

Review

Daughter of Joy is a beautiful story of redemptive love. Abby's walk of faith, sometimes followed by sheer force of will alone, resonated in my heart. And Conor's painful journey back to the safe harbor of a loving and forgiving God brought me to tears. I usually read the low star ratings then move on up to the 5 star ratings. What I found was a common complaint about Kathleen Morgan using her character's own thoughts and interactions with the other characters to promote her (Kathleen's) personal beliefs--and preaching them to each reader.

I personally am very thankful that Kathleen Morgan did that. I advocate natural family planning, and today in 2011 there is no reason to use 'female preventatives' when a doctor advises you to avoid pregnancy. (NFP today is not your grandma's rhythm method--the relationship between the medical community and science is hand in hand.) But back in the late 1800s, there were fertility suppressing methods in practice by using various herbs and plants. These would be the preventatives the author had the characters discuss. The storyline between Ella and Devlin is one that women who adhere to Catholic teaching may find themselves in today in 2011. (women to adhere to catholic teaching may not be catholic, but embrace the catholic teachings on matters of family planning) The virtue of self control is a gift of the spirit. And if a doctor suggests that having another baby may be very damaging to her health...and it is against your religious convictions to use artificial birth control, abstaining would be your only choice. Through many methods of NFP, periodic abstainance is the way a woman avoids pregnancy--she is able to know when she is fertile and when she isn't. For the reality of Devlin to not be able to control his desires to be with a woman...he goes to a brothel. And our author allows us to experience with him his internal guilt from his sin. We also see his wife lovingly forgive him and show compassion for the very hard situation they were in. And through it all, we see Ella remain faithful to her convictions in faith...to me, this was very encouraging. We also see her own struggle with her guilt in that her hard place was driving the two of them apart--it truly can be a matter when a husband feels his wife loves God more than him...
And then at the end of the book...her revelation to Abby filled me up with hope.

There are many comments Abby made to her fellow characters (the preachy comments written negatively about) that I actually bookmarked and plan to journal on and meditate upon. The depth of spiritual maturity really communicates to us Kathleen's own faith and the degree of refinement her own struggles and sadness have brought to her.

All in all, when I met my husband, I was in a very low point in my life...and he found himself in a similar place. We were both struggling with various aspects in our life...and coming together actually made things harder at first...but in the end, everything has been made right. The character of Conor actually reminded me so much of my husband...and to tell the truth, I fell in love with Conor's character, because of the spiritual condition and the core of his character Kathleen laid out before us. Many of the things Conor said...so too did my husband say to me. "Whatever it is you want, just tell me and I will do it." And Abby's reply...it replied the echos in my own soul. Everything works out in God's timing...that is something my husband and I have learned through our 8 years of marriage.

At the beginning of this book, Kathleen Morgan revealed a part of her heart. Her sufferings of losing her youngest son...and made a comment about how this book was a way of healing for her...and that in many ways reflected elements of her life. She concluded with, and perhaps you will find the same goes for you.

I want to thank you Kathleen for writing this book. Abby's character inspired me greatly on how God's ways are not our ways....and in the end all things will work out. Our hearts will be at peace. God bless your continued work and may you be comforted.

Got the book as a free Kindle download and am glad I decided to read it. Loved the characters and the depth she created in them. Love the focus on God and how people learned to listen for and lean on him.

Two suggestions - I found many typing, spacing, grammatical, and spelling errors. The second is that author describe Abby as a woman whose faith is important to her. It is obvious a relationship she has with God. However, near the end of the book it is called her religious faith. Myself and many others find religion to be a hindrance to true faith in Christ. I know everyone doesn't get the difference, but I thought it should be mentioned. I am not trying to be hyper-critical, just letting you know something many are sensitive to. But please be aware, you will never be able to make everyone happy. It's impossible. I hope this will not discourage you, or upset you or your readers. It is just an observation.

Thank you for allowing me to enjoy this book free. I also noticed her late husband's name was the same as mine who just passed away a few months ago. I wondered then what God had in store for me when I saw his name early in the book. I think I understand, it's about learning to live again after a devastating loss. I have been isolating, lackluster, not even attending church, community group, or Bible study. I have been very anti-social. I get the point. Thank you, and God for that.

    God bless you,

    Donna Robb

What a wonderful story that really wrenched my heart. Whoa! Abby's faith was so inspiring to me. The passion between Abby and Connor is so palpable! And Connor is so raw in his love/desire/lust for Abby.

    STORY SYNOPSIS:
Connor - needs a woman in his life but not for sex. There's always the whore house in town for that. No he needs a woman to care after his home, cook food and take care of his rude, drop-out, half-Indian daughter. So he needs a maid and live-in governess in one.

Abby - needs to get away from her life. The recent losses of her husband and son and the overbearing nature of her sister-in-law makes Connor's job the perfect escape.

However Connor and Abby are two gorgeous human beings and Connor especially exudes a lot of sexual appeal so its only a matter of time before they do it right? Hmmm, well Abby is also an old fashioned Christian gal and while in these modern times Christianity is more like a fad than a true way of life, way back then in the 19th century there were Christians who truly believed in the value of chastity before marriage. Abby is one of these beautiful Christian women and the battle she faces with her growing desire for Connor, which she easily recognises is much more than what she ever felt for her husband, is truly one that deserves a lot of respect. [KEY NOTE: Yes I know there are many, not-so-chaste Christian women who love the Lord a might lot, and they are just as beautiful in the sight of God but this is Abby's story ok.]

OTHER STORY HIGHLIGHTS: A rapist in dire need of a beat down, a cousin who sleeps with a prostitiute who coincidentally conceives around the same time, a son who betrays his father, the dead who "come back to life" and a little girl named Beth who has beed a victim of racism and needs a lot of love and understanding.

SPECIAL NOTE TO THE ONE STAR REVIEWERS/NAYSAYERS: This is a historical christian romance. Isn't it amazing that we as contemporary literary seekers could read and appreciate other historical romances even though we may not agree with the torturous corset of the Victorian era or the fact that some teenage girls were forced into marriage and not even considered for college. We don't have to do history to realise that popularly accepted values have changed considerably over the span of the century but yet that is where this series is based - in a time over 100 years ago!
Also some people only have their faith to get them through the hard times and Abby is very dependent on her faith. Are some of her conversations with "God" imaginary? - yeah sure it all takes place in her head but with all that she went through you could basically say that her faith saved her mind and gave her a reason to live and move on.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Daughter of Joy" by Kathleen Morgan
Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2013
"Daughter of Joy" is the first book in the "Brides of Culdee Creek" series, taking place in the Colorado district in the year of 1895. This story revolves around - Abigail Stanton, and, Conor MacKay -- both trying to leave behind and forget their pasts. The book captured my attention from the beginning to the very end. Kathleen draws her readers in -- being able to relate to the various characters, who are hurting and running from painful memories. How the characters learn to -- grow, trust again, forgive, and even to even love .... is truly remarkable.
Excitement, drama, action, and more will have you not wanting to put the book down, and most definitely not wanting it to come to an end. Kathleen's books are always Christian-based, historical, fiction romance. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be caught up in a well-written story.

This was a well written story, the characters especially Abby were easy to identify with. The author was able to use scripture from the bible to support the story. The story shows how one can lose alot and suffer emotionally but later be rewarded with what was lost with alot more added. It also show the power of love through forgiveness and how this had an impact on Abby and Conor's life. A true historical romantic story.

I loved this book. It is classed as a Christian book and there is lots of references to God however because I read a book for the plot, ease of reading and understanding, interest and enjoyment I have to rate this book as a 5 star. Great book that kept my interest from start to finish and although I am not a religious person it does did make me think on some things in my life.
Also not sure what the fuss in about and cannot and never would understand less than an least a 3 star review

A Christian based romance novel tells of two people confronted with tragic and grief in the past, trying not to lose their faith in God and deal with their mutual growing attraction to each other.
I found the last third of the story a bit too gushy, but apart from that, it was lovely to read, with a well thought out plot and a believable development of their characters, finding themselves and their way back to faith through all the obstacles life and other people throw at them.
I really enjoyed reading this and would not mind to read the sequel to this.
