There were two subjects which lonely widower Edward de Salis never discussed: his dead wife and his family home in Ireland, 'matchless Cashelmara'. So when he meets Marguerite, a bright young American with whom he can talk freely about both, he is able to love again and takes her back to Ireland as his wife. But Marguerite soon discovers that married life is not what she expected, and that she has married into a troubled family bitterly divided by love and hatred. Cashelmara becomes the curse of three generations as they play out their fates in a spellbinding drama, which moves inexorably towards murder and retribution.

Of all the historicals Susan Howatch has written, I love Cashelmara the best.

If you're not familiar with Ms. Howatch's work, her historicals bring to life the reigns of English kings with an estate, in this case Cashelmara, representing England. The exception is The Rich Are Different and Sins of the Fathers. Those two books are based on Caesar, Cleopatra, Antony and Octavian.

Each of the major characters in Cashelmara tells their own story starting with Edward DeSalis and each character tells their part of the story from their own point of view. There is never one side to a story, and Ms. Howatch gives each of her characters a chance to tell their side.

As historical fiction, Cashelmara is well-researched and follows closely the lives of Edward I, Edward II, and the early life of Edward III.

As a novel, it's a rip-roaring tale with a cast of fascinating characters. Whether you know the history or not, you'll enjoy this multi-generational saga of lust and power; my favorite kind of book.

But for me, the real joy is the words. I can say these books are very well-written, but that's too easy a description. It might be more accurate to say that Ms. Howatch paints a picture with her words. No matter how I put it, the effect is that I am drawn into the lives of these people and I feel as if I'm a part of it all.

There are very few authors whose entire body of work I can read straight through. Susan Howatch is one of the few. I will be diving into the Starbridge Series for the fourth time when I finish the historicals. I have a lot of good reading to look forward to.

This is not a frolic. If you like a happy ending every time, skip this one. However, it was extremely well written. There were so many memorable lines. As grim as it was, there were interludes of humor. As well written as it was, there were interludes that were so painful, I was prompted to skim. The sex was integral to the story but it was not graphic or prurient for the most part--it relied on your intelligence to fill in the blanks to the extent you wished. That said, I would still not recommend it for a reader younger than 15.

I was surprised that Cashelmara was told in a very similar format to the Church of England series (just compressed into one very long book.) Both have six sections, each with a different person narrating the story from their perspective.

In Cashelmara the story starts with Edward, the patriarch of the family and the one who has made the family great. He is a Barron, an important member of the House of Lords. He owns an English estate and a London home in addition to the vast estate of Cashelmara. But while he is still healthy and in the prime of his life, his wife and four of his children have died. The book starts right before he meets and falls in love with Marguerite, a young, distant cousin of his former wife from New York.

The story then switches to Marguerite's perspective, then Edward's son Patrick, Patrick's wife, then Maxwell Drummond and ends with Patrick's son Ned. The sections are titled, Duty, Fidelity, Loyalty, Passion, Ambition and Revenge.

This is a long historical fiction book, nearly 700 pages and I spent most of the week while I was at the beach reading it. It does not have the brilliance of the Church of England series. Howatch is a very good story teller. And the characters are the central focus of the book.

The main plot, which does not really show up until nearly 2/3 of the way through the book is very much a soap opera. The problem with this method is that it is not clear to me what the first half of the book is really doing in the book. It gives background. But do you need more than 300 pages to just give background? And the main plot seems wildly different from the early character given marriage drama that is the root of the first half of the book.

The characters are interesting, but I wish Howatch has done more with Marguerite and picked a different plot. I am glad I read it, but it is a far less important book than the Church of England series.

I am mixed about whether I should give a content warning or not. There are several murders (although who does some of them is a bit unclear). There is some graphic descriptions of pretty brutal rape and some other sexual content. But this not romance or erotic book. They are part of the plot and not nearly as descriptive as many other books.

Howatch has the ability to capture your imagination as well as a large chunk of your time, but you cannot stop reading. The families are so alive, the events so demanding, the history of the English, the Irish and the Scots so intertwined.

Wonderful details bring open doors to each part of a continuously long family history. The scenery is so colorful, even details about flowers, trees, and an unforgettable garden designed by a main character. Religion of the Catholic and Protestant
Faith plays important parts, along with potato famine, politics and education. Susan Howatch is quietly providing readers with moral choices of profound consequence right to the last page.

A huge family saga, but not the usual things one expects, instead a gripping story ,which includes almost everything.I read already Penmarric and was fascinated and this book is at least same good.
I can just say the same someone wrote about Penmarric: You read it and you will never forget it.
It just belongs to the books, they keep in your mind and are far more than just a little bit entertainment .
I can recommand it to everybody, who loves books with unusual family relations, mystic places and of course Britain, the culture and the history.
