'Outside lies a world of death. Inside the room the blind, imperious Hamm sits in a wheelchair while his lame servant, Clov, scuttles about obeying his orders. Each depends fractiously on the other: Hamm alone knows the combination of the larder while Clov is his master's eyes and last remnant of human contact. The only other survivors are Hamm's legless parents, Nagg and Nell, who squat in upstage dustbins and die during the play.' Michael Billington, Guardian

Samuel Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969; his literary output of plays, novels, stories, and poetry has earned him an uncontested place as one of the greatest writers of our time.

"Endgame", originally written in French and translated into English by Beckett himself, is considered by many critics to be his greatest single work. A pinnacle of Beckett's characteristic raw minimalism, it is a pure and devastating distillation of the human essence in the face of approaching death.

Samuel Beckett was born in Dublin in 1906. He was educated at Portora Royal School and Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in 1927. His made his poetry debut in 1930 with Whoroscope and followed it with essays and two novels before World War Two. He wrote one of his most famous plays, Waiting for Godot, in 1949 but it wasn't published in English until 1954. Waiting for Godot brought Beckett international fame and firmly established him as a leading figure in the Theatre of the Absurd. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. Beckett continued to write prolifically for radio, TV and the theatre until his death in 1989.

A richly absurd masterwork of existential theater. Although this is only existentialist from a certain perspective. As Adorno has argued, Beckett was preoccupied with a confrontation with existentialist ontology-this work is the negation of existentialist thought via `subtraction,' which is to say that Beckett subtracts from the raw materials of ontology and presents their non-sense as sense. After an implicit event of annihilation, the characters of his tragedy play out the impossibility of any reconciliation with meaning. Beckett lives in the world of non-sense, and for many, this play is incomprehensible. And it should not be interpreted. It is simply the presentation of man's reconciliation with absolute alienation.

It is a very desperate and despairing world that we live in, according to these plays, Endgame and Act Without Worlds. In Endgame, we try to avoid reminders of the past and of the world beyond ourselves, shutting out other people as we try to find our own amusements and routines to while away the hours. Yet we are still tied together and dependent upon one another, which we only realize after we lose one another. In Act Without Words, we are tricked and toyed with, and though we struggle to continue and get what we want, sometimes it is not enough.

I didn’t realize this was a new book! For the price I assumed it was used I’m very happy

Saw the play at the local university, and kept thinking about it. (Which, I suppose, it what one is supposed to do after an existential experience.) I only made it a couple of semesters as a philosophy major, so trying to think this one through was kind of a tail-chasing exercise. So, kindle to the rescue--I bought a copy of the play. Did it help? Well...Kind of. In the end, it is a lot more enjoyable to read the play and try to insert various existential realities into it than to just look it up on the internet and run with the reviews there. Hey, maybe that's what it means!

Fast Shipping. I'm not a huge fan of Beckett or his experimental style, but I appreciate him, and this play is also required for my Master's comprehensive exam.

Personalmente non mi è piaciuta l'opera. Oltre a questo il libro si presenta bene di buona qualità, ma 11 euro e passa per 80 pagine è davvero troppo.
I didn't really like the opera. However the book is well made, but more than 11 euro for just 80 pages is pretty expensive.
