In a world where the League and its assassins rule, where betrayal and treachery are everywhere . . . the only survivors are those ones who are . . .

BORN OF SHADOWS

For Caillen Dagan, a defiant soldier of fortune, survival isn't a right, it's a brutal daily battle. Moving through the Ichidaian universe like a wraith, his brushes with the law and death are legendary. But when an act of rare heroism reveals his hidden birthright, he's forced into a world much more dangerous and cold-hearted than the bloody streets where he was raised-one of obscene wealth and lethal politics.

Ferocious and determined, Desideria serves as an official bodyguard for her queen. Born of questionable genetics, she will do anything to prove herself worthy of the weapons she carries and the position she's won by combat. But when she uncovers a ruthless plot to assassinate the queen and overthrow her country's government, Desideria is caught in the crosshairs.

With assassination contracts out on both of them, Caillen and Desideria must learn to fight together or die alone. And if they fail, their governments will fall into the hands of an unimaginable evil.

Born of Shadows is yet another smashing hit in the League series of novels by author Sherrilyn Kenyon. I am a huge fan of science fiction, and this series blends sci fi, action and romance so well that I just cannot read them enough.

In Born of Shadows, the 4th in the series, we get rogue Caillen Dagan's tale. He has played a prominent role in Born of Night (Nyk's tale) and Born of Fire (Syn's tale.) His oldest sister, Shahara, is actually now married to Syn. In this story, Caillen comes into his own. He is sarcastic, funny and a smart ass, but also unwaveringly loyal, brave and honorable to those he cares about. His life has been filled with one problem after the other, until he learns the truth about his birth. Now more of an outsider, he is trying to fit in with the politics and schemes of the aristocracy when he stumbles upon an assassination plot. With Cai's luck, things go awry quickly, and he is once again hunted for something he did not do. With him on his misadventures is a Qillaq princess, who'd just as soon have his head on a platter that have to work together with a male. Through it all, they learn to trust and rely on each other, and yes, they fall in love. And of course, despite horrific odds, they manage to survive and in the end, they are able to be together. This may sound like a bit predictable for a story line, but I love it! I love for the hero and heroine to find a way to be together - it makes the book for me.

S.K.'s characters are very dimensional, and have mouths on them that will leave you laughing out loud. There are too many great lines in this story to really try listing them. Still, I can't help but offer a few:
"Subtlety is for those you lack the skill and the balls to be bold." Caillen
"Just FYI, bud, you might want to put on some pants before you go see her. Hard to sweep a woman off her feet and look badass in a hospital gown when your bare ass is hanging out." Syn
"I swear I'm wrapping you in a padded, blaster-proof suit and locking you inside a shielded bomb shelter." Desideria

Another great book from this author. If you haven't had a chance to read anything in this series before, I highly recommend it. The books are stand alone, and do not have to be read in order. It is always fun to see the characters you've met before pop up in the other stories as well, and the League series has some of the best characters around hand down.

I have enjoyed a few of Sherrilyn Kenyon's series and this is one of my favorites and was so excited to read about Caillen. Learning his back story from his nutty sisters and the range of previous favorite characters further developed was great fun. This is book 4 in the series. One interesting fact is that Sherrilyn initially wrote this series close to 2 decades ago when it finally got published and now she's continuing forward with it.

I enjoy the sci-fi of this series and this book carries forth in this fantastic universe. So if you want a change of pace from the typical paranormal romances (vamps, wolfs, fae, witches, valkyrie, etc...) give this a try. I would recommend reading in order, but at minimum read Born of Fire prior to this one.

This ended up being my favorite book so far! Caillen is a smart mouth, wise ass, heroic and lovable character. It's quite the adventure with snappy dialogue and good character development. I was laughing out loud, wiping my tears and turning the pages as fast as I could to see what would happen. Not all was predicable, which was part of the fun, and there were good twists and turns that where satisfying.

This story is a good addition to the League series. I don't understand what the other reviewers are complaining about when they say it's not as good as the previous books. The romance of the main characters, Caillen and Desideria, is told just as well as the previous ones in my opinion - typical Sherrilyn Kenyon romance. I was not as caught up in it as I was in the previous book but more than likely, it's because it's been awhile since the last book and therefore the continuity was no longer there for me as it had been for the first three books. Might be a good idea to re-read Syn's book (Born of Fire (The League, Book 2))) if you don't remember that story. However, this story is still a good story with lots of action, intriguing characters, and interesting plot. If there is one issue that I am beginning to have about this series it's that the "twist" to the history of almost all the major male characters is starting to be the same. If you're a follower of the League series, you should not stay away from reading this one.

Third in The League series doesn’t disappoint as it continues with the story of Caillen Dagan, young brother to Shahara Dagan in Born of Fire.

Both hero and heroine are likeable with supporting characters in Darling Cruel, Fain Hauk and his younger brother Dancer. You’ll meet Maris Sulle, who has greater roles in subsequent books.

Syn Wade and the Dagan sisters make a reprise appearance, as does Nykyrian.

Desideria is a strong female character who discovers Chayden Aniwaya is her brother.

The Audible narrator is easy to listen to although there is little distinction between character voices.

Andarions have thickly accented voices and the narrator neglects to give Hauk and Fain that distinction. He also mispronounces Nykyrian’s surname, which is a pet peeve of mine.

This was an excellent read. The main characters were so different from each other as well as being so very interesting. The secondary characters were all unique and enjoyable. The plot, well, it was so unpredictable and full of intrigue. There is absolutely no way you could predict what was going to happen next or who the big bad uglies were going to be. It was full of action on every page. Twists and turns aplenty. It left my brain spinning. The romance was hot, but only an important part of the storyline. Not the entire storyline. It was an intelligent read. Of course, all of this author's books are intelligent reads, so I wasn't surprised. But, this one was exceptionally so, which gives the brain a workout while flying through a brilliantly imaginative universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caillen Dagan. Renegade. Smuggler. Pirate. Prince. Hero.
Reviewed in France on July 8, 2012

4.0 out of 5 stars Space Opera mit einem kräftigen Schuß Romance *3.5 Sterne*
Reviewed in Germany on February 26, 2012
