About the Author
He read vast numbers of books, acquired a love of language, and became insatiably curious about other people. He also had a variety of jobs, 32 at the last count, including working in abattoirs, hospitals, morgues and a haunted house.
In 1985, rather to his own surprise, he found himself teaching English in the Australian bush, at Timbertop School. Noticing a complete lack of interest in reading among his Year 9 students he tried his hand at writing a short novel that he thought they might enjoy.
The rest is history. John Marsden, author of the Tomorrow series and Ellie Chronicles, is now the world's most successful author of teenage fiction. He has sold a million and a half books worldwide, and has won awards in Europe, America and Australia. His first love however is still teaching, and he spends most of his time running writing camps at his property, near Hanging Rock, Victoria.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2021Book number six of a seven book young adult action adventure fiction series. I read the well printed and well bound trade paperback published by Scholastic Paperbacks in 2007 that I bought on Amazon. The first book in the series was actually published in 1993, this book was first published in 1998. Book #6 is out of print so I had to order a used copy. I have also bought book #7 from Big River. And of course I found out that I could have bought the entire series in trade paperback at a discount:
At the middle of their high school senior year in Australia, a group of seven 17 and 18 year old teenagers decide to go camping in the bush for a week before school restarts. They gather up their sleeping bags and supplies and go way out into the bush, actually at the edge of the desert in a place known as Hell. After a difficult trip by Land Rover and a long walk, they camp next to a spring fed stream. When they return to Ellie's farm after a week, her family is missing and the farm dogs are dead on their chains. They find out that Australia has been invaded by an Asian nation and that their families are being held captive at the town fairgrounds. The Asian forces have taken the airports first and then the cargo shipping seaports. The justification of the invasion is that the Asian nation needs the extensive natural resources of Australia.
It has now been a year since the invasion began. Ellie and her remaining friends blew up the huge airbase in the region by sneaking in the back of a supply truck and throwing grenades into the jet fighters being refueled. They managed to escape in the confusion by jumping in the river and floating twenty miles to the next town. While laying low, they rescued several orphan children. Now what do they do ?
The first book in the series was made into a film of the same name in 2010.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2013This one continues the story of a group of young people caught up in a war they didn't want. Very good reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2014Once I started reading the series I could not stop. Having taught school for 38 years I felt I understood more keenly what Ellie and her friends were going through. The emotional toil they experienced was heartfelt. It was a real page turner and a good read for all ages.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2015I loved them all, Author could have used an editor once in a while, but as a whole the books were very good, I am just bummed that there might not be a 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc movie. Altho "Ellie" who is on "Reign" still looks young enough, and "Corrie" who I saw on a tv show recently could rock it as a teen too. So? Is it a go or no go?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2013I love this book series. Every book was excellent. The series is made for teens but is a great read for adults too. I am 42 and loved it. It is written from a girls point of view, but the story is good for either sex.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2013John Mardsen has the ability to hold your interest. Having bought the first book only because I first saw the movie "Tomorrow when the war began", I'm afraid I was hooked. A bit off putting knowing it was aimed at the teenage market, Nevertheless, the concept was fascinating and the book well written. So - as the title says, this is book 6 and the story continues.
I guess part of the fascination is placing oneself in that same situation. Australia divided into two countries with the invader allotted their share right next door to your family farm? Peace? I don't think so.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2013Had heard mixed reviews about the 6th book in this series, although there were some slower parts and a few departures from the usual typ of story, but I did still enjoy it. Introducing the new characters of the children as well as showing some growth and new sides to the already established and well loved chracters. Going into the 7th and final addition to the series is feeling bitter sweet.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2013I read to my kids a lot and I got this whole series to read to my 13 year old son. He loved them, and wished there had been more when we finished all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yesssss
Love it so much and more of cliff hangers than the first few the intensity is certainly picking up, each character gaining a more unpredictable roll. Heart wrenching yet so so beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much action
The Night is for Hunting is the 6th book of the series. This book is just perfect. You see the character evolve in so many ways with the addition of a few new people to the series. (Not telling who, it will break the fun). If I would have been there, I might have loose patience, but Ellie and her friends found so much energy event when they didn't had any left.
Although the chapters are a bit longer, the story moves really fast and a lot happens. I know I said the other books where page turners but this one is even more. A lot of action, a few stressful moment and a few time I even laugh.
If you read the 5 other books before, don't stop, "The Night is for Hunting" goes perfectly between the 5th and the 7th book. I recommend ordering this book while you read the fifth one. While you are at it, buy the last one (The Other Side of Dawn), the story will continue exactly where it left.
Last word of advise, don't read the back of the book. It kinda ruins the book a bit.

Wahnsinnig spannend! Mehr kann ich dazu nicht sagen, Sie müssen es einfach selbst lesen! Viel Spaß dabei! Hoffentlich werden noch ein paar Teile davon verfilmt :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Sheer brilliance yet again from John Marsden. This book raises so many questions and confronting concepts that we tend to ignore, yet are staring us in the face every day.
