Experience the true nature of terror in this "deliciously imaginative" (San Francisco Chronicle) horror thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Peter Straub.

The quiet suburban town of Hampstead is threatened by two horrors. One is natural. The hideous unstoppable creation of man’s power gone mad. The other is not natural at all. And it makes the first look like child’s play...

“Unspeakable horror…has ‘Bestseller’ written all over it.”—Los Angeles Times

“Straub’s effects are quite spectacular…I was fairly awed by some of the more nightmarish scenes in Floating Dragon.”—The New York Times

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Peter Straub was, quite simply, one of the finest writers of the last hundred years. He was a poet who painted the beauty and the darkness of the human heart with fine words and exhilarating stories. His fiction disturbed, evoked emotion, and changed all of us who read it. We were lucky to have him.”—Neil Gaiman

Praise for
Floating Dragon

“From the dark terrors of the human heart to those of the mysterious, dangerous world all around us, this is Straub's horror on an epic scale.”—Thomas Tessier

“Here is a novel guaranteed to double the national nightmare quotient, so watch out.”—
Cosmopolitan

“Buy it today. Anything by Straub is worth several thousand John Sauls and a million V.C. Andrewses.”—Philadelphia Inquirer

“A book that positively bubbles with invention, jammed with characters, color, events, hackle-raising twists of fate, horrific monsters, terrifying nightmares, and a reality that shimmers and shifts as much as the noxious stream from a witch’s cauldron.”—Book World

This book was mystical , mysterious, frightening but spell bound you to keep reading. How 4 main characters saved their small part of the world together and fought off the evil that was destroying their town. Good book, tense but exciting.

This is a very good horror story with excellent character development and a very good plot line. I didn't give it five stars because I felt it was overwritten. As the emperor said to Mozart that his piece had too many notes, I feel this book has too many words. The plot is excellent, though not new; every thirty years or so (or is it every hundred years - some confusion) an evil that is connected to an evil character in the distant past, comes back in one form or another, in the guise of one person or another, to wreak havoc on the town of Hampstead, Connecticut, sometimes destroying it completely. However, this book could have been trimmed significantly. The first hundred pages or so (maybe less) goes back and forth ten years in the timeline, leaving me often quite confused. Then the timeline goes linear, except that the writer suddenly stops writing in the third person and comes out of character to talk directly to the reader. This is distracting and he does it a few times later. Finally, fighting the evil, the characters go through endless contortions that seem to go on for too long. A worthy read for lovers of horror that could have used a lot of trimming down. My rating is between three and a half to four stars, but still a recommended read.

Floating Dragon by Peter Straub tells the tale of the small town of Hampstead Connecticut and the horrors it endures every thirty years or so. There is a lot going on. Numerous characters and quite a bit in the way of of the town's history appear as the four main characters (and us readers) try to make sense of what is truly going on. Unfortunately for the town, there are two really, really bad things going on... the first is an ancient and supernatural evil, the second is an invisible cloud of gas that having recently escaped from a lab, has settled over the town and is slowly driving everyone crazy. Residents begin to hallucinate, some are driven to suicide and in the case of the most unfortunate, some find that their bodies have begun to liquefy. But there is so much more and to find out, you really need to read it for yourself. This book is often compared to Stephen King's "It". If you are a fan of that book, you will find some similarities but keep in mind this is not a nostalgic coming of age horror novel and it doesn't have the same feel of a book like "It". It does succeed as a small town horror novel and a very good one but takes a little while to get going. But be patient... when it comes to horror, this isn't a light snack... it is more of a three course meal followed by sitting at the table and sipping a small cup of freshly brewed coffee. So plan accordingly and don't rush. Reading Floating Dragon is time well spent. 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars This is book that I recommend. Honestly
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2017
I read this book in the 90's but in its Spanish version, when I was in Sixth Form. I must admit that it captured my imagination and interest from the start. The way that the author develops the subtle link among all the events happening in the town and how the main characters were connected, using a bit of local history to explain all the misfortunes befallen to the inhabitants, was very clever and really transported me to the plot itself. This is book that I recommend. Honestly, until I read Stephen King's "It" and learnt about the similarities between the books, I was unaware of identical storylines and endings. Well, both books are among my favourite ones. Despite this, I still like this book a lot and after 20 years, I am pleased to have read it in its original version. Perhaps I am biased by writing this review but it is my personal opinion.

Good value, and prompt delivery; at a great price. Not part of the author’s famous Blue Rose trilogy, but a clever and diverting fantasy novel. If you like the author’s Shadowlands, then you’ll probably like this too. In style, Peter Straub tends to be serious in tone; and uses narratives which build gradually to the dramatic scenes and “big moments”. Also, plenty of atmosphere and some good characterisation. A great novel, from a brilliant writer.! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2020
I read this in early 80's when it first came out and thought it was a brilliant read. Just read again and still as good. I presume 'It' came afterwards and borrowed a few ideas. Think this is the better book. Quite appropriate for these Covid times, with the strange flu pandemic caused by the floating toxic cloud released from the Government lab. Read 'Ghost Story' and 'Shadow lands' after this and they were just as good if less 'gory'.
