“I haven't read anything that has moved me this much since Wonder.” —Jennifer Niven, author of All the Bright Places

A space-obsessed boy and his dog, Carl Sagan, take a journey toward family, love, hope, and awe in this funny and moving novel for fans of
Counting by 7sWalk Two Moons, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

11-year-old Alex Petroski loves space and rockets, his mom, his brother, and his dog Carl Sagan—named for his hero, the real-life astronomer. All he wants is to launch his golden iPod into space the way Carl Sagan (the man, not the dog) launched his Golden Record on the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. From Colorado to New Mexico, Las Vegas to L.A., Alex records a journey on his iPod to show other lifeforms what life on earth,
his earth, is like. But his destination keeps changing. And the funny, lost, remarkable people he meets along the way can only partially prepare him for the secrets he’ll uncover—from the truth about his long-dead dad to the fact that, for a kid with a troubled mom and a mostly not-around brother, he has way more family than he ever knew.

Jack Cheng’s debut is full of joy, optimism, determination, and unbelievable heart. To read the first page is to fall in love with Alex and his view of our big, beautiful, complicated world. To read the last is to know he and his story will stay with you a long, long time.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—Using only transcripts of podcast recordings to tell a story might be limiting for most narratives, but here it allows 11-year-old Alex Petroski's naïveté and essentially optimistic and ethical nature to come shining through as he tells of his road trip with his dog, Carl Sagan. The decision to travel to SHARF (Southwest High Altitude Rocket Festival), near Albuquerque, NM, is as matter-of-fact as his choice to address his posts to possible extraterrestrials, who he hopes will find his iPod and figure out how things work on Earth. Alex's mother is clearly less than competent, and his distant brother, Ronnie, lives in Los Angeles, which allows Alex to pursue his intense interest in space and rockets unsupervised. Things go awry from the start, but various helpful characters come to his rescue, enabling Alex to continue his journey away from Rockview, CO, and eventually return to the town. He's an intelligent, likable kid, and readers will enjoy following his journey as he learns who is in his corner when the chips are down. It is eventually revealed that his mother has a mental illness, which shines light on the workings of their relationships and explains how Alex has come to be so self-sufficient. VERDICT A smart read with some serious themes. Give to tweens who love unusual realistic fiction.—Carol A. Edwards, formerly at Denver Public Library

I enjoyed this story so much I bought 45 copies so my entire freshmen English Language Arts class can read it. We need to bring books into the lives of teens they will actually enjoy reading and find relevance too. Save the “classics” for when they’re adults and can appreciate them. Get teens reading stories like See You In The Cosmos and we might actually see students become adults who choose to be life-long readers. You will enjoy this story no matter your age.

This is the first book in years that I've read in print AND then purchased the audio version to listen to it. Primarily this was because the book is written as though it's a podcast. Man, was I glad I did that. The actor on the audio was perfect, and the story took on a whole new depth in audio.

The accolades you've heard about this book are all true. As soon as you start this book, you feel you know 11-year-old Alex, want to root for him, and admire his spunky, optimistic, determined spirit. It's the story of a boy who has a dream to launch his rocket into space, sending the podcast he's creating to outer space. He wants to let aliens know what life is like on Earth.

It's no surprise that he is able to single-handedly accomplish some amazing things, with no help from parents and only a dog named Carl Sagan by his side. If you think this is a book about a kid who loves science, or a kid and his dog, think again. I was not prepared for the many, many surprises in store--all of which rang true. Implausible? Not here, not for Alex. It all makes sense.

This is so "real" it will seem almost like an autobiography. It redefines family in a way no one has done before. I can't wait to see Jack Cheng's next novel.

While reading this book, I transformed into that crazy lady who bursts into laughter in the airport, on the train, and waiting in the grocery line. I can't remember the last time reading made me actually laugh out loud (not just a chuckle or a smile). The story is at times funny, endearing, suspenseful, aching, and self-reflective.

Don't be fooled -- while this may be classified as a children's book, it is a delight for those who are still young at heart, who are excited to chase their dreams, or who believe in the incredible power of human decency. The protagonist's innocence is a powerful force in the story, maybe even enough to reach beyond the book and affect our own behavior.

  • Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018
Cute read. The only thing I'm a little unhappy with is the form it tries to present: a set of recordings as if it was a diary by an 11-year-old boy trying to reach whatever life form is in outer space, but this only adds to one of the problems the book has. It fails to actually leave the paper sheets and make us forget that we should be hearing it instead of reading it. So, if you actually make it to this review: don't get the paperback, get the audiobook instead. Nonetheless, it will still be a faulty "book" and you'll be hearing someone read it.
