Purchase options and add-ons
Dallas's friend Chief Medical Examiner Morris and Coltraine had started a serious relationship, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone from Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on Coltraine's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.
The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else."
But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

I Have the (HARDCOVER) OF Promises In Death "Autographed" By J.D.Robb
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024Probably the best in this series--and there will be 60 of them come February 2025--because it shows Eve Dallas' heart and soul. I haven't liked each of the In Death books; I adored this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2015The 29th book in the In Death series, Promises in Death, does not disappoint. As with all of the In Death books, Lieutenant Eve Dallas goes through a transformation of sorts. She goes from a wily tough cop with Issues (yes, with a capital “I”) to a bewildered newlywed wife trying to balance on the shifting sands of a complex relationship with a former criminal to a begrudging true blue friend to a small army of people that see her for who she is – a heroic human being whose past molder her into the extraordinary cop (with razor sharp instincts!) she is today.
In Promises in Death, Lt. Dallas is confronted with a death that hits close to home…a fellow colleague. Further, it’s the cop who is in a relationship with a good friend of Dallas’. This case goes front and center immediately for Dallas as well as for Cop Central. Before long, it’s clear the murder was done by someone who knew the fallen cop. npleasant questions have to be raised to get to the truth which is Dallas’ unofficial religion.
There are several supporting characters in this series: Dallas’ other driving passion, her sexy and very technologically savvy hubby, Peabody, Dallas’ partner, and Feeney, Dallas’ mentor and the head of EDD (e-detective, read: hackers/e-geeks that are cops) – all work toward finding the fallen cop’s killer. All while trying to keep their sanity and their emotional equilibrium intact. A taxing proposition for the writer, J.D. Robb, but one the reader will enjoy tremendously!
Promises in Death will thrill you, cause you to put your own sleuthing skills to work, and it will bring you to the brink of tears as the characters’ actions, moods and desires flood each exciting page. Find out how Dallas and her motley crew of talented driven friends and colleagues solve this one! You’ll be ever so glad you did.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023The usual intriguing storyline the series is known for. Makes you laugh, feel sad, angry. This was a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2015Thank you, JDR. I love the in Death series. Yes, some of the situations are gruesome. If that bothers me, I skip over that part. I'm most interested in the relationships between the recurring characters and the resolutions of the mysteries. I enjoy Eve's bewilderment at the rituals of social engagement, her frustration that you have to buy a housewarming gift for someone because they bought a house, her horror at the idea of bridal/baby shower games (I agree), But I consider JDR to to be a master at developing character relationships, at the very clever dialog that sometimes makes me laugh out loud. The recurring characters in these books teach each other, love and support each other, and are amazingly fun to know. I felt amused and happy at every reference to Peabody clomping around NY in her pink cowboy boots.
I couldn't find a new book to read that seemed any good, so I turned on my Kindle and reread every one of the In Deaths. I'm so tired of boring and predictable stories. So, please, Ms. Robb, keep writing. I have almost 900 books on my Kindle but not too many of them engender the excitement of this series.
One last thought. Don't think I've ever found a grammatical error in one of these books, but they abound in most others. Was completely sunk by continual references in one book to a male character "sewing" his wild oats. What an image.

5.0 out of 5 stars De cortar o coração
Maravilhoso.
