All Summer Long (Fool's Gold, Book 9) Mass Market Paperback – July 31, 2012

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,475 ratings

Former underwear model turned entrepreneur Clay Stryker has loved, tragically lost and vowed that he'll never risk his heart again. After making his fortune, the youngest of the rugged Stryker brothers returns to Fool's Gold, California, to put down roots on a ranch of his own. But he's frustrated to discover that even in his hometown, people see him only for his world-famous…assets.

Firefighter Chantal (Charlie) Dixon grew up an ugly duckling beside her delicately beautiful mother, a feeling reinforced long ago by a man who left soul-deep scars. Now she has good friends, a solid job and the itch to start a family—yet she can't move toward the future while she's haunted by painful memories.

Clay finds an unexpected ally, and unexpected temptation, in tomboyish Charlie, the only person who sees beyond his dazzling good looks to the real man beneath. But when Charlie comes to him with an indecent proposal, will they be able to overcome their pasts and find a love that lasts beyond one incredible summer?

From the Author

Dear Reader,

I love all the characters that I write, but there are a few who find a special place in my heart. Firefighter Charlie Dixon is one of those special few. I adore Charlie. Her crabbiness makes me laugh, and her big, generous, vulnerable heart makes me want to be her friend. I don't know if I've ever been happier to write a happily ever after.

Charlie is determined to get over her painful past so that she can move toward the bright future her best friends Annabelle and Heidi found earlier this summer. (See Summer Days and Summer Nights.) Could Clay Stryker, of all people, be the man to help her heal? Clay made his fortune as an underwear model and a Hollywood butt double. He could very well be the most handsome man in the world. By all rights, this small town firefighter should be wildly intimidated by the man's classic good looks. And yet... Charlie just might be the only woman in the world more dazzled by Clay's heart than by his world-famous... assets. Can she trust Clay enough to approach him with an indecent proposal?

Susan Mallery is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of books about the relationships that define women's lives—romance, friendship, family. With compassion and humor, Susan keenly observes how people think and feel, in stories that take readers on an emotional journey. Sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, and always uplifting, Susan's books have spent more than 200 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list, thanks to her ever growing legions of fans.

Critics, too, have heaped praise on "the new queen of romantic fiction." (Walmart) Booklist says, "Romance novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and RT Book Reviews puts her "in a class by herself!"

Although Susan majored in Accounting, she never worked as an accountant because she was published straight out of college with two books the same month. Sixteen prolific years and seventy-four books later, she hit the New York Times bestsellers list for the first time with Accidentally Yours in 2008. She made many appearances in the Top 10 before (finally) hitting #1 in 2015 with Thrill Me, the twentieth book in her popular series, the Fool's Gold romances, and the fourth of five books released that year.

Susan lives in Seattle with her husband, a ragdoll cat, and a small poodle with delusions of grandeur. Her heart for animals has led Susan to become an active supporter of the Seattle Humane Society. Animals play a big role in her books, as well, as she believes they're an integral component to a happy life. Visit Susan online at www.SusanMallery.com.

Mrs. Mallery delivers another compelling story with unique but relatable characters. Getting through Charlie's tough exterior and discovering how peoples pasts can affect the person they become made for very interesting reading. But even more compelling was the journey to then break down those walls when the right person came along. The story to me was all about perceptions - who we thought Charlie was and who we thought Clay was from first impressions - and then finding out how much more there was to them and how much we would have missed out on if they hadn't taken the time to get to know each other more.

"All Summer Long" is the 9th book in Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold series. This is by far the steamiest book in the series; Susan upped the sizzle factor for Clay and Charlie. I loved this couple; they are a great balance for one another. Both of them have been stereotyped for their looks, but towards one another they look deeper to the beauty within. Charlie is an extremely likable character. She's a snarky, tough, honest woman who hides a vulnerable side. I admire her honesty; I want to be that kind of woman. Clay is just....YUM!!! Besides being a specimen of male perfection; he's intelligent, kind hearted and hardworking (I need a superpower to bring things I read about to life =) Clay's slow seduction of Charlie is what I think made this book so hot. Can you say anticipation!!!! Charlie's mother was a surprise. Even though she's awful for most of the story, I felt she redeemed herself in the end. I thought it was highly ironic that Clay's mother was giving Charlie's mother advice on how to connect with her daughter. I like how Susan always sets up the next book's characters (this time it's Evie) The ending was great and believable considering who Clay used to be. I give "All Summer Long" 4/5 stars, well more 4.5/5! It was one of the best books of the series but I felt it lacked what I consider the best of the series, "Only His", had.....serious humor!! I'd say this one is my 2nd favorite.

I will confess to being a huge fan of Susan Mallery and specifically the Food's Gold series. I actually expected this book to be my least favorite. An underwear model? It turns out that this was my favorite book yet! I loved the dynamics of Charlie and Clay as a couple. It was a great storyline that grabbed you by the heart. The book is definitely worth the time you devote to reading it. Susan Mallery's description of Fool's Gold is so atmospheric and picturesque that you feel like you are living there with them. Superb writing!

All Summer Long is another great Fool's Gold time; Charlie has been one of those characters I have wondered about in previous books. Never sure if she would find any kind of love due to here strong, independent personality; how delightful to have Clay enter the picture. His easy confidence is exactly what Charlie needs to finally find her way into love and romance. Clay has his own struggles figuring out how to get past his butt double, underwear model persona and be taken seriously. As always a very fun, entertaining story. I look forward to Evangline's tale, but will most definitely mourn the end of the Fool's Gold legacy (perhaps Ms. Mallery will keep it going?).

All Summer Long is definitely my favorite of the Stryker brothers series. Charlie is a local firefighter who is fighting the demons of her past and needs to figure out a way to become "normal" again so she can carryon with her idea of wanting to have a family some day.

Clay Stryker is a former underwear model who comes home to Fool's Gold to start a normal life and join his family at Castle Ranch. He figures that by joining the volunteer Fire Department, it will help him become a regular part of the community, as long as everyone can get past how attractive he is and take him seriously.

Charlie and Clay form a friendship and they enter into an agreement that on the service seems to be mutually beneficial to both of them, as long as their feelings don't get in the way, which of course, they do!!

As as side story, Charlie's mother, Dominique comes back into Charlies life after having a health scare and realizes that she wants to try and have a regular relationship with her daughter, but their past history and the way that Dominque treats her daughter could be a problem and Charlie needs to figure out if this is a relationship that she really wants to have.

First the good news: this book is easy to read, the pace is good, the story flows, some of the conversations are fun, both H/h are interesting to read about and the feel of this fantasy town is very pleasant. Now for the bad news: the whole story is just too unrealistic and stretches even my very excellent ability to suspend disbelief, so it was hard to really "feel" this story, and there were plot devices that were clearly there just to add "filler" to keep the story going just a bit longer (e.g. the obstacles that cropped up as H' set up his business.) The whole story felt as if it were written by formula - which isn't always bad but in this instance was too obvious. The story felt forced and people did things that were out of character, each time there was an instance of this I found it harder to believe the story. SPOILERS: I found it hard to believe that the impact of rape would be cured like that; the character of the mother was so dreadful that it was hard to believe in such a speedy redemption, much less in the miraculous healing of the mother-daughter relationship; the problems that occurred in the H's business plan felt like filler and were distracting for nothing; and the whole way H "broke up" w/ h was silly and made no sense for someone who had been a thoughtful character up to that point. END SPOILER ALERT. That said, it was a pleasant enough way to spend a few hours and I will go back and read more Fool's Gold stories.

Story of a woman uncomfortable with romance and love, and a man who's first love had died. They get together, and slowly she falls in love - and much to his surprise so does he. Well told, worthy of Susan Mallory.

As always Susan Mallery has brought to life two interesting and flawed characters and allows the reader another glimpes into the lives of the inhabitants of Fool's Gold. With every book she adds amusing and touching layers that makes the reader feel like the characters are friends. In this book, Clay, a former underwear model and Charlie, a firefighter form an likely bond and as always the exceptional town plays a big part in their budding relationship. Touching and funny this book is a wonderful addition in the continuing saga that is Fool's gold.

1.0 out of 5 stars Invraisemblable et ennuyeux....
Reviewed in France on March 16, 2013

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought it for a beach read; no emotions...

I read this book in 2 days on a beach trip. I specifically wanted something very light. It was indeed. I didn't feel the emotions I usually feel for the people in the book. I couldn't understand Charlie's desires to become a mom as it wasn't explored. Once it became clear the two lovers would become an item, I felt it was rushed and it didn't deliver. It will not be enough for me to try a second Susan Mallery book. Maybe it is not one of her best?
