A sparkling chemistry she can't ignore.

Wedding planner Avery Crosslin may be a rising star in Houston society, but she doesn't believe in love—at least not for herself. When she meets wealthy bachelor Joe Travis and mistakes him for a wedding photographer, she has no intention of letting him sweep her off her feet. But Joe is a man who goes after what he wants, and Avery can't resist the temptation of a sexy southern charmer and a hot summer evening.

After a one night stand, however, Avery is determined to keep it from happening again. A man like Joe can only mean trouble for a woman like her, and she can't afford distractions. She's been hired to plan the wedding of the year—a make-or-break event.

But complications start piling up fast, putting the wedding in jeopardy, especially when shocking secrets of the bride come to light. And as Joe makes it clear that he's not going to give up easily, Avery is forced to confront the insecurities and beliefs that stem from a past she would do anything to forget. The situation reaches a breaking point, and Avery faces the toughest choice of her life. Only by putting her career on the line and risking everything—including her well-guarded heart--will she find out what matters most.

Avery was a up and coming wedding gown designer living in New York, loving her life. When her dead-beat dad is about to pass, she returns to Texas and meets her half-sister. The two women find the family love that has been lacking from their bitter mothers and selfish father. The two build a wedding and event planning business that is growing fast. At their largest and most high-profile wedding, Avery mistakes a guest for the photographer’s assistant. Luckily, the man, Joe, is good natured and smitten with Avery.Joe, a son in a Houston dynasty, has Avery breaking all her own rules including a one-night stand. She doesn’t think his high society status will allow them to have a long-term relationship. Joe knows he wants her and isn’t giving up. Avery and Joe spend more time together when Avery is hired by Joe’s cousin to plan his wedding to a Houston playgirl with social climbing parents.Complications continue, and in the end, Avery has to decide who she really is and what she is willing to do to succeed and more important, what she won’t.This book is great, with character I could see in real life. The story is interesting, and I enjoyed that conflict was compelling. The drama was moving at points, and funny at others. The subplots were also compelling, including explaining her and his reactions to stimuli. Values were a big part of the book and I loved how they were part of the plot. The sex scenes were hot and entertaining.I picked up this contemporary and it was very satisfying, just the kind of book I love to read.

I love the Travis series by Lisa Kleypas and I was so thrilled to find there was going to be a book for Joe. I felt a little jipped that we got to read about Gage and Liberty, Haven and Hardy, and Jack and Ella but not Joe. These books are wonderful, deep, emotional, and have so many things going on in them. I still re-read these books from time to time and it is like catching up with an old friend. Avery Crosslin and her sister Sophia have a wedding planning business and they are rising stars in Houston society. During a wedding that she and her sister planned, she meets Joe Travis and she mistakes him for a wedding photographer.

Avery believes in love but doesn't think it is something that is meant for her. She and her sister Sophia are half sisters that share the same father. He loved to get married but he didn't seem to believe in monogamy and broke many people's hearts. Also, Avery was left at the alter by her ex-boyfriend/ex-fiance. She is instantly attracted to Joe Travis but doesn't think he is meant for her. He's wealthy, he's charming, and she thinks they come from totally different worlds. She's also planning a wedding that she doesn't really believe in or think will last but she doesn't want to turn a great opportunity down. There is also another opportunity upon the horizon that could take her away from Houston and back to New York City.

Joe comes from a close knit family. He's the youngest of the siblings and for many years he and Churchill didn't have much of a relationship. But luckily they mended their relationship before Churchill died. He's a talented and wonderful photographer. He does so many good deeds and always helping others. He and his family do not think they are better than others because they are wealthy. He knows what he wants and he doesn't let anyone stand in the way, even Avery. He knows there is something about her and he is so drawn to her. He works hard to get passed her walls and show her that there are so many wonderful things to her.

Definitely worth reading.

THE STORY: Avery Crosslin is a wedding coordinator who believes in happy endings for others but not herself. After being left at the altar by her fiance, Avery has shut herself off from the possibility of love. Three years after her world collapsed, things are changing for Avery. The company that she is building with her half-sister is about to take off with the wedding of the year. She may have the opportunity to return to New York to be the star of a new reality wedding show. And sexy Joe Travis has come into her life.

Joe Travis is entranced by the competent sparkling Avery from the moment he meets her. What he doesn't understand, however, is why Avery rejects him at every turn. An intrigued Travis doesn't give up easily and is determined to get behind the wary walls that Avery clings to.

OPINION: There is much to like in this story.

Joe Travis is steady and gentle and determined and sexy. He is determined to pull Avery to his side and yet he will not stand in her way when she thinks of leaving him. I found that behavior to be adult and incredibly supportive. If there are any complaints it is that Joe is almost too good to be true.

Avery is professional and adult and incredibly hurt and wary. She is the impediment to a relationship with Joe. Her fears are understandable and she has to work through them...but at times her determination to cling to her fears are infuriating. I really liked how Avery is a moral person even to her own detriment and how she eventually recognizes what a wonderful thing she has with Joe.

The book also has a secondary romance that is sweet and gives a nice boost to the romance in the book.

For me, the weakness in the story is the plot line involving the wedding that Avery is coordinating. I guessed the plot turn early on and I didn't think that story added any drama or depth to the novel. As a result, although I liked this book, I just didn't find it as compelling as the others in the series (especially the superlative BLUE-EYED DEVIL).

I did like the cameos by the characters from the series, but I wish there had been more about the family and less about the new characters involved in the wedding drama.

This book completes the Travis family series and for fans of the series, it gives closure.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes place several years after the events of the third book in the series SMOOTH TALKING STRANGER.

FINAL DECISION: I enjoyed this book, but it lacked some of the vitality and depth of the other books in the series. Nevertheless, I recommend the book especially for fans of the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: BROWN-EYED GIRL is the fourth and final book in the Travis Family series. Although there are cameo appearances by other members of the family, this book can be read as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give BROWN-EYED GIRL 4 stars.

I have been waiting for this book about Joe Travis since I finished "Smooth Talking Stranger". It was worth the wait. I really loved reading Joe and Avery's story, with all the cast of characters from the other books thrown in. I would suggest reading the whole Travis series about Gage, Haven, and Jack to learn more about this wonderful Texas family, and their mates. Each book pulls you more into the lives of this remarkable family, with all their dedication, problems, and love they have for each other.

Joe and Avery are no exception to the other Travis stories. Once Joe meets Avery, his mind is set on her even if she fights him with all her fears. Avery comes with her own set of problems. She had a father who abandoned her and remarried and had children with a number of other wives. Then she was stood-up at the altar on her wedding day, and put her heart into cold storage. Once she meets Joe her heart starts to open up to all the possibilities. She and Joe are a passionate couple, in and out of bed, and Joe knows just how to get her feeling again. The cast of characters in her life keep this book moving, and the secondary romance between her sister, Sophia, and Steven is a great addition in itself. Avery is a warm, compassionate woman. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I.

One note to Ms. Kleypas: How about the Travis cousins? Now, you have whetted my appetite to find out what kind of woman will capture Ryan's attention. Please don't leave me hanging too long before another visit to Texas!

Somehow not as vivid as the first book in the series, but still a very good read. Liked the curvy, unconfident female protagonist.

3.0 out of 5 stars A 3.5 star pleasant read but not as good as the first three Travis books
Reviewed in Australia on January 15, 2017
I did enjoy this book overall, although I agree with other reviewers that it's nowhere near as good as the first three books in this quartet. It's hard to pin down exactly why it's not as good. The H, Joe, is still a gorgeous alpha hottie like the other Travis men (and Hardy), but we don't learn a lot about him in this book. I think my main problem is with the h, Avery. Her occupation, which she seems to be pretty good at, is a wedding planner. But sadly I've got almost zero interest in wedding planning, and the huge OTT weddings she works on in the book just seem a ridiculous waste of money to me. And then she gets a chihuahua with no teeth. Oh, please....... that was almost the last straw for me :(

Avery seems too weak and indecisive, and I found this pretty frustrating. The author did show her background and why she was the way she was. But overall I didn't connect with her and I couldn't really see what the wonderful Joe saw in her. He was way too good for her IMO. Their relationship didn't feel real, and their connection seemed to be lacking.

However having said all that, the book wasn't a total bust. It was great to catch up with the Travis family again, to be in their fictional world. And I did enjoy some sections of Joe and Avery's story. I just felt overall the story was lacking and not up to Ms Kleypas' usual high standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars It was worth the long wait

I have to say that I have waited a very long time for this book in the Travis family to come out and it was worth the wait. So happy I got to catch up on the rest of the family. Joe is such a sweetheart and Avery is a independent and smart woman. If you are a fan of the other books in the series, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Und siehe da!
