- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024Congrats to Ms Pilcher on a well written story. The book was easy to flow, despite multiple characters. Lots of different lives to follow, but we'll blended. The twists and turns were believable and well done. Sometimes life is good despite our circumstances.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024Pilcher develops characters that you would want to know in real life - mostly! The descriptions of people, places, and situations are so real that it is easy to immerse yourself in the story. I love reading this book in November/December because I can more easily relate to the settings. And the simple messages of thanks, gratitude, and living are wonderful during this somewhat dark period. A lovely book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2024In Winter Solstice, Rosamunde Pilcher intricately weaves the lives of five diverse characters, each seeking connection and purpose during the holiday season. Elfrida Phipps, a former stage actress, moves to the quaint English village of Dibton, where she longs for companionship despite the comforts of her new surroundings. Meanwhile, Oscar Blundell has sacrificed his musical career for family life with his wife Gloria and their daughter, Francesca, reflecting on the value of his choices.
As the story unfolds, Carrie returns from Australia after a tumultuous affair, only to find her mother and aunt caught in constant bickering. She steps in to care for her aunt's reserved teenage daughter, Lucy, allowing her mother to pursue a romantic distraction. Sam Howard, grappling with the aftermath of his wife leaving him, seeks solace and renewal in the rugged beauty of northern Scotland, dreaming of a new beginning.
The lives of these characters converge in a large, neglected estate near the fishing town of Creagan, united by the ripple effects of a shared tragedy. Pilcher captures the essence of love, loyalty, and the promise of rebirth in this heartwarming tale set on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Winter Solstice is a profound exploration of human connections, perfect for readers looking for a story that celebrates resilience and new beginnings during the holiday season.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2024A bit saccharine but lovely nevertheless. I fell in love with all of the characters and the descriptions of the places. This book was just what I needed after a very stressful move, etc. if you are looking for a lovely story without high drama to keep you on the edge of your seat, this might be for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2024Rosamunde draws us in once again! I picked this up as my UK Christmas vacation read. I didn’t want it to end. I was immediately drawn into the worlds of Elfrida, Oscar, Jeffrey, Lucy, Carrie, Sam and the rest of the supporting cast. It hits all of the emotional highs and lows of human behavior in a setting that is the epitome of the festive season! Settle down with a wee bit of drink in front of the fire and enjoy this delightful book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2024Winter Solstice is the fourth Pitcher novel for me. I' d say they are all equally good. The greatest strength of Pitcher's writing is the description of natural beauty. The second greatest strength is the conversational exchanges, filled with so much depth . Everyone has a great gift of expression, scintillating and concise , to deepen the relationships . Even the children are serious and profound. To a fault. The typical fluff of human dialogue is relegated to a few unlikable minor characters. Fluffy and therefore minor. But then that's why the writing is so great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story aboutn human kindness and resilence
Once again this author engages us with her beautifully developed characters as they face major changes in their lives - loss, grief, hope and renewal. It takes place in a beautiful setting in Scotland. I was intrigued to learn when I looked the area up, that there are tours offered that take you to many of the locations that were inspiration for this novel. It was a great story for a warm, cozy read on wintry days that leaves you feeling hopeful about finding the good in others.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish
A totally boring and banal read which I couldn't be bothered to finish as none of the characters or the story interested me enough
