About the authors
Janet Ahlberg (21 October 1944 – 13 November 1994), née Janet Hall, and Allan Ahlberg (born 5 June 1938) were a British married couple who created many children's books, including picture books that regularly appear at the top of "most popular" lists for public libraries. They worked together for 20 years until Janet died of cancer in 1994. Allan wrote the books and Janet illustrated them. Allan Ahlberg has also written dozens of books with other illustrators.
Janet Ahlberg won two Kate Greenaway Medals for illustrating their books and the 1978 winner Each Peach Pear Plum was named one of the top ten winning works for the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005). In the U.S. it was published by Viking Press in 1979 as Each Peach Pear Plum: an "I Spy" story; the national library catalogue summary explains, "Rhymed text and illustrations invite the reader to play 'I spy' with a variety of Mother Goose and other folklore characters."

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2018I loved this book as a child and was so excited to share it with my own two children. My younger child (2.5) has loved the concept of the mailman and mail truck forever and has newly become obsessed with fairy tales, and boy did he fall in love with this book! It follows the Jolly Postman about his day as he visits various fairy tale characters and delivers their mail -- which you get to open up and really remove from pages that are envelopes. There is so much detail here in the illustrations and the witty text in each letter. This book is truly enjoyable on so many levels. My toddler mostly reads the main text and loves opening the mail. He pretends to deliver it to each character. My 5 year old enjoys reading each letter with me The letters are so funny! The Big Bad Wolf hears from an attorney, who threatens to send all the king's horses and all the king's men after him if he does not vacate Grandma's cottage. This is by far not a board book and we've had one small tear from my younger child -- just plan to keep an eye on it with younger children but the content is absolutely accessible to them. The language is a bit British in places but easily understood by young children in the US and a good opportunity to help them build comprehension and vocabulary. I would highly recommend this for ages 2 and up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book
I bought this for our grandchildren (aged 4 and almost 3) - it was a favourite with my sons, and often gifted to other children.
Just a lovely book - with cleverly created letters by characters from favourite fairy tales. A joy to share!

5.0 out of 5 stars indispensable
ce livre pour enfants est vraiment indispensable je l'ai acheté pour l'offrir à une petite anglaise mais il existe en français et a fait le bonheur de ma fille lorsqu'elle était petite avec les vraies lettres distribuées par le facteur aux personnages de contes

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a classical book for children
This is a classical book for young children and a pleasure both for children to be read by themselves if they can read already, and for reading to them, if they are at the pre-reading stage. I brought up four daughter in the 1980s. They are bilingual German/English and we live in Germany. My mother-in-law-always provided me with lovely books and videos in English. This is one of the books I actually did not at first remember, but my daughter did. Above all, she remembered the little inserts that hold all the letters in envelopes, and that one letter was written by Goldilock, in which she abolished for taking the three bears' porridge.
Then, last year, my daughter had a baby daughter. So I bought her this book, so when the child learns English, my daughter can read the book to her, too. And the text begins with "Once upon a bicycle..." I love it.
