About the author
Jennifer Crusie was researching her dissertation on the differences in the way men and women tell stories when she got sidetracked into writing romance novels.
Her first book was published in 1993 (which pretty much finished off any hope of her getting that PhD) and her twenty-fifth book, One in Vermillion, part of the Liz Danger mystery series written in collaboration with Bob Mayer, came out in September of 2023, all of which she considers a minor miracle, especially since she is also a New York Times, USA Today and Publisher's Weekly bestseller and a two-time Rita award winner.
Jenny is now working on the Rocky Start mystery series also in collaboration with Bob Mayer. She is a very happy woman.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2023I love and adore this book, and Jennifer Crusie is hands down my favorite romantic comedy author. Her characterization is fantastic, her dialogue snappy, and she manages humor beautifully. Absolutely, BUY THIS BOOK! Crusie tackles multiple lines in this that most authors just don't do -- stalking, for one, and that's compounded by the fact that the character who's a stalker is, like many other stalkers, someone that nobody believes COULD be a stalker, or dangerous. Not only that, but she did a fantastic job with the stalker's characterization, so you get *why* he is the way he is -- a clear example of how one's virtues can turn out to be one's vices.
The A line romance between Nick and Quinn is just fantastic. I could go on for paragraphs about why, but that's the clearest way I can put it. It's a wonderful friends to lovers storyline with a heroine (and hero!) that you'll root for all the way through -- and unlike some romances, these characters feel *real*. They're people you not only could know, they're people you want to know. I'd love to be able to go have a coffee with Quinn and Darla!
The B romance line, though, might be, in its way, even better and more unique than the A romance line. It's Quinn's best friend Darla and her husband Max, who is Nick's brother. As the B romance, obviously, it doesn't get as much time, but it totally hits on the cylinders as to just why people in love might want something more -- and how they get it. It's funny, it's on point, and it's sheer perfection.
I also recommend buying the companion book, The Crazy for You stories. Crusie includes a lot of the work that fed into the writing of this book, including one novella that made it into Redbook featuring Darla's sister, Debbie, who's pretty much a bit character in this book. It's hilarious and has a definite scent of the Dixie Chick's 'Goodbye Earl' to it, if you ask me, but in a mild form. It also includes a short story that fleshes out the character of Barbara, and puts a whole new spin on why she does what she does.
That said, do NOT buy the audiobook. The audiobook was clearly edited tightly; the performance is clipped and I didn't realize that it was abridged until after I got it. It cuts out ALL the scenes between Darla and Max, so basically, the entire B-line romance. That sucks! The B-line romance is SUCH a great counterpoint to the A romance between Nick and Quinn, and what's more, Crusie did such a beautiful job of showing how you can have two people who are in love with each other but still wanting something to spice up their marriage and make it new. Besides which, it cuts out several of the funniest scenes in the book! I was so disappointed to see that was missing.
So, buy the Kindle, buy the paperback -- but avoid the audiobook, which is a shame, because the vocal performance is really very good.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2024The book was good and I had a few chuckles in the beginning. The f>&%@ was introduced and it didn't go away. Then, there were the sex scenes (which I skipped). Then, everyones' relationships were upended. That was fine, but it all kept going on and on and on. I finally fast forwarded to the last chapter and read the conclusion just to see what happened.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2024Sometimes you just need a change. And Quinn certainly needed a change, only to find out she'd have to fight to get that change. Men keep everything in individual, untouching boxes (Google men's brains and women's, watch the video, you'll thank me later) sooooo true.
Read this book. Great plot! Wonderful, complex, true to life characters. Fantastic dialogue.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2024It's not every day that a story can make you laugh at times and be horrified at times and so interesting that you can't pout the book down.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2024When this book was written, gaslighting of women by their significant others wasn’t as understood. Now it is and while I love this author and knew there would be a Happy Ending, it was a little tough to get through.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2024Jennifer Crusie is probably my favorite comic/romance writer. And this book is one of her very best. I've read all of her older books, and am now trying to read her later ones with Bob Mayer. The first one they did together, Agnes and the Hitman, was quite good, but I find it slow going through the Liz Danger ones: lots more sex and not as much comedy. And not nearly as good as this one. Another early one that I really love is Tell Me Lies, but it also needs an unabridged audio. The abridged one leaves out some wonderful scenes, esp. the scene when Maddie a good, popular school kid, feels sorry for C.L. Sturgis and is nice to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, fab and addictive
I love Jennifer's sense of humour. Maddie's gran was just the most fab creation. Crusie creates 3-dimensional characters that you can't help but fall in love with. She doesn't write nearly enough for my liking!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love these people so much. Time spent in their company never stales....
I can’t understand why Ms Crusie stopped writing these gorgeous stories. She writes so well and with such warmth I re read her novels whenever I’m down. Cheaper than therapy
