The Ex: A Novel Hardcover – January 26, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
In this breakout standalone novel of suspense in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on a Train, a woman agrees to help an old boyfriend who has been framed for murder—but begins to suspect that she is the one being manipulated.
And look for Alafair Burke’s latest heart-racing novel of psychological suspense, The Wife, coming in January 2018.
Twenty years ago she ruined his life. Now she has the chance to save it.
Widower Jack Harris has resisted the dating scene ever since the shooting of his wife Molly by a fifteen-year-old boy three years ago. An early morning run along the Hudson River changes that when he spots a woman in last night’s party dress, barefoot, enjoying a champagne picnic alone, reading his favorite novel. Everything about her reminds him of what he used to have with Molly. Eager to help Jack find love again, his best friend posts a message on a popular website after he mentions the encounter. Days later, that same beautiful stranger responds and invites Jack to meet her in person at the waterfront. That’s when Jack’s world falls apart.
Olivia Randall is one of New York City’s best criminal defense lawyers. When she hears that her former fiancé, Jack Harris, has been arrested for a triple homicide—and that one of the victims was connected to his wife’s murder—there is no doubt in her mind as to his innocence. The only question is who would go to such great lengths to frame him—and why?
For Olivia, representing Jack is a way to make up for past regrets, to absolve herself of guilt from a tragic decision, a secret she has held for twenty years. But as the evidence against him mounts, she is forced to confront her doubts. The man she knew could not have done this. But what if she never really knew him?

Jack tells Olivia a rather bizarre story about him and a mystery woman he saw while out running and explains that was why he was in the vicinity of the shooting that day. But the woman he claims he saw doesn't exist, at least not under the name she gave him. As Olivia begins to dig deeper she begins to believe Jack is being framed. Or is he? Some things just don't add up.
This one had me convinced at first that Jack was innocent. Then a new stone would be overturned and I'd find myself wavering. Back and forth I went, never really certain until the very end what was true and what was not. The author did an excellent job of mixing things up. I liked the way Olivia and Jack's story was told through Olivia's memories of Jack rather than through flashbacks to another time. I hate when an author does that. In this instance, there was no break in the natural flow of the story. While I didn't care much for Olivia at first - she was involved with a married man - her character grew on me as the story began to unfold. She was tough, independent, and driven to succeed. Jack was very likeable and I sympathized with the difficult times he went through in his life.
This was one I didn't want to put down and definitely recommend.
This book started out compelling and interesting to me. But about halfway through, I started getting weary of the legalese and other aspects of the case. I mean, I get it, that’s the main story, but it got tedious to me.
I figured out “whodunnit” very early on; maybe that’s the reason I got tired of all the legalities and “did he do it ... no ... yes ... maybe ...” circles that went round and round. It was hard for me to believe that the two very intelligent and insightful women, and investigators, didn’t think of it. I ended up skipping to the end just to see if I was right. I was.
It’s not a terrible book, just not one I wanted to continue reading. I guess I wasn’t invested in the characters enough to keep caring, once I knew where it was heading.
On a sidenote, and this is not the author’s fault, nor did it affect my rating ... for the love of all things holy, can we please stop with every book being the next Gone Girl or Girl On A Train? PLEASE. It’s run its course, ok, whomever writes book blurbs? Enough.
