Chapter One
The air hummed with bass guitar and rampant lust. He'd come to the right place.
Ian MacPhie strode across the renovated warehouse, his steps falling into rhythm with the pounding drums. The Horny Devils was the best place he could think of for finding a woman. The nightclub was teeming with them. All lovely and all Vamps.
Bright red and blue laser lights zipped here and there, highlighting the ladies' scantily dressed, bouncing bodies as they danced close to the stage. They surged in time with the pounding music like a wild sea at high tide, and he was sucked toward them in a greedy undertow.
One of the red lights zoomed past him, flashing in his face and blinding him for a few seconds. A burst of panic shot through him. What if none of these ladies found him attractive? What if he'd suffered twelve days of agonizing pain to look older and . . . ugly?
As a Vamp he couldn't see his new face in a mirror. He'd appeared in a few digital photos at Jean-Luc's wedding, or he thought he had. He hadn't recognized the strange man in the pictures. Heather had assured him he looked good, but she'd been such a happy bride, she'd thought everything was beautiful that day.
As Ian's vision readjusted, he realized his moment of panic didn't matter. None of the ladies were looking at him. They all faced the stage, their gazes riveted on the male dancer who strutted down the runway with an Indian warbonnet on his head. The war paint on his hairless chest depicted an arrow that pointed south where a bunch of strategically placed eagle feathers hid his wampum.
Ian took a deep breath and assessed the situation. True, the ladies hadn't noticed him, but he hadn't really tried to get their attention yet. These lassies were certainly in a lusty mood, so his chances were good. Time to put his new face to the test.
He eased into the crowd. Now what should he say? Jean-Luc had successfully courted Heather using charm and wit. He'd give that a try. "Good evening, ladies."
The roar of the music was so loud, only two lady Vamps heard him. They turned their heads and boldly inspected him.
"Not bad," one of them yelled at the other.
Ian gave them what he hoped was a charming smile, though it faltered a bit when he noticed the second girl was wearing black lipstick. He supposed the modern lassies considered that attractive, but it gave him flashbacks of the bubonic plague.
"Nice kilt," the black-lipped girl yelled. "Cute knees."
"Aren't you a dancer?" the first girl shouted.
"Nay. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Ian Mac—"
"Oh, I thought your kilt was a costume!" The first girl laughed. "Do you seriously dress like that?"
The black-lipped girl joined in on the laughter.
"We need to see more than your cute knees!"
Ian hesitated. He needed a witty, charming response. "I'm sure that could be arranged."
Unfortunately, his attempt at flirtatious banter went unnoticed. A sudden surge of high-pitched screams distracted the two girls, and they turned back to the stage. Feathers were flying, and the crowd of women bounced up and down, determined to catch a feathered souvenir."Begging yer pardon." Ian tried to regain the two girls' attention. "Could I buy you a drink?"
"That one's mine!" The black-lipped girl shoved the other girl to the side so she could nab a feather.
Ian stepped back, dismayed at how the ladies were pushing each other. He glanced at the stage and gulped. By all the saints, the women had plucked the dancer like a chicken. These modern lassies were more aggressive than he'd realized. When it came to finding his mate, he had assumed he would do the hunting.
Ian moved back to keep from getting jostled by the frantic feather-grabbing women. Perhaps it was a matter of timing. Aye, timing was very important when hunting prey. He would sit back and wait for the right moment. Sooner or later, the dancers would have to take a break, and maybe then the ladies would be more easily impressed.
And while he waited, he'd fortify his nerves with a stiff drink. He strode toward the bar. He had it all figured out. He was searching for a girl who was honest, loyal, pretty, and intelligent. In that order. And of course she would need to be madly in love with him.
That last part was a little tricky. How did he go about making the perfect girl fall in love with him? He doubted his alleged cute knees would be enough.
The female bartender had a phone to one ear and her hand pressed to the other to muffle the loud music. "Sure, I'll keep talking. So you're from California? Land sakes, that's far away."
Two young ladies materialized beside her. They'd used the sound of the bartender's voice as a beacon to help them teleport to the right location.
"Welcome to the Horny Devils." The bartender smiled as she hung up her phone. "What would you like to drink?"
"Two Blood Lites," one of the California girls ordered. She snapped her sparkly rhinestone-covered cell phone shut, then dropped it into her shiny handbag.
The second girl pointed toward the stage. "Oh my God, he's so hot!"
The girls forgot all about their drinks as they scampered toward the stage.
Ian lifted a hand in greeting. "Good evening, ladies."
They passed him by, their gazes glued to the dancing Indian, who was down to his last two feathers.
Ian sighed. What was the world coming to when a man with honorable intentions had to compete with a male stripper? How could he impress these modern lassies? Maybe Vanda could advise him. With her purple spiky hair and spandex clothing, she'd become a very modern woman. And a very successful one since Vamps were teleporting from the West Coast to come to her club.

But how thrilling that she can share this magical new world with her readers! Although she is best known (so far) for the Love at Stake series, which has hit as high as number 5 on the New York Times list and 22 on the USA Today list, she hopes her readers will love The Embraced as much as they did her merry band of vamps and shifters. - Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021I have read many of her books and loved every one. The vamps are sexy and funny. The ladies are smart, strong and funny. I can't wait for Dr. Fang to find his mate. With the invention of synthetic blood, they no longer need to bite to survive. They need to keep their secrets while still helping humans and fighting the malcontents. These books are great fun!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013This review concerns the whole series.
I ve read better since then, but i have to say that when i started reading the series "Love at stake", i got completly caught up in it. The story is quite interesting, funny, coherent, very entertaining and moreish. The characters personalties and physics as well as the places, scenes and actions are all well described and easy to picture, espacially the sex scenes, which i particularly appreciated! LOL! And literally loved the kilts!
I haven't found any repetitions or spelling mistakes (not that i m an expert anyway) as i have in some other books.
Despite the emotional rollercoaster effect that the books had on me , i found a bit odd that some whatever hundred years old bad ass vampires who had all been single for all their life would all of a sudden all fall madly in love one after the other, just like that at first sight, and would commit to an eternal relationship with a mate after not even a week sometimes. But i guess it s part of the game! Yeah i liked it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2024I love it sooooo much. Ian is such a doll. I admire the fact that he didn't want to deceive a woman about who he was. He and Toni were just adorable. I could read this one again and again 💖
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2017Toni is the newest victim of the Malcontents and the newest Day Guard for the Good Vampires. Then she runs into the hot vampire Ian and boy is he hot in his kilt. Toni knows she has a plan, she has to get Sabrina out of the psych ward and to prove vampires exist. She can't tell Ian what is going on and Ian knows she is hiding something. With the war with the Malcontents heating up can Ian convince Toni that there is more than humans and vampires to consider and that she must follow her heart? Great read and I loved Ian and Toni! Another hit from Kerrelyn Sparks in the Love at Stake Series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2009This book had a funny premise so I thought I would try it from the regular angst riddled regular vampires. I was so excited that I read it in six hours. I love Shanna and Roman. It was funny and really interesting. The story (if you can believe a romance novel has one) expands through the remainder of the series. I love how all the characters show up in future books so you can always keep up with this original couple. I also liked how the main vampire has a huge support network. The vampires in this series are pretty traditional of modern vamp storytelling (stake through the heart turns to dust, sleeps during the day, drinks blood and burns in sunlight) so that was a little disappointing. I was looking for a 24/7 vamp that was invincible like the legendary vamps. Either way I wasn't disappointed in the story even though it was predictable. I recommended it to my friends and we're all hooked.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2009I know it's strange to try and find logic in reading a romance novel about vampires and other interesting wild animals, but I do expect a vampire romance to make some logical sense. Although an interesting read, it was also a frustrating read. This is the second book I've read by Ms. Sparks and, unfortunately, it's like a repeat of the first book. In the first few chapters of the book, Ian was depicted as immature and kept stumbling over his feet due to his rapid 12-day-growth spurt which made him 12 years older. Issue #1: Ian was almost 500 years old; Dougal came across as more mature. #2 Ian had his new body for well over a year, there should not have been any stumbling over feet. If anything, I could understand if he experienced a greater issue trying to fight and balance his sword because of his body change.
The fact that the Vamps hired Toni to guard them during the day is just ridiculous. I also felt she was untrustworthy. No matter how the author put a spin on it, Toni spoke and shared Vamp information too freely. The Vamps security as a whole was extremely amateur at best. The fact that they had a huge Christmas party after an explosion and ransacking of one of their townhomes was idiotic. The logic behind the "party must go on" attitude was that the Malcontents wouldn't try anything because there would be a lot of Vamps in attendance. I would say that's the perfect opportunity for another bomb!!!
Lastly, but not least, this book was too predictable. And I ABSOLUTELY hate the way she depicts Phineas as this 1970's jive talking black guy. Kerrelyn, black people do not go around high-fiving people as a greeting. Since Phineas was a drug dealer in his previous life, his greeting should have been described as a slight lifting of his chin.
Overall, the author has a good writing style, but her books are too fluff, fluff and doesn't do much in the make sense arena. However, there is humor in her books. So if you want a light vampire romance with humor and romance these are the books for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2013I like this book. I think this the best book of love at books. i wish I was Toni because mind control work on her and at the end of the vamp power but still human. This book is so rommmic. I love book. I can’t put the book down. All other people were in this book. This book there is human who work for vamps as a day guard and her friend is in matel hospital. her name is Toni and meets a vamp name Ian. If u like vampire book and u are adult, u will like this book. It was very decide, so you are not adult to not read it. The decide the sex scene in very detail.

2.0 out of 5 stars The book may be good with others in the series but not as a standalone
To be clear - this is not a bad book. I was totally crushed that it wasn't a Christmas story and only had the barest of associations to the holiday. With a title like this I defintely anticipated for Christmas and less traditional novel 😪.
I have not read the others in the series so I was playing catchup on the world. I liked Constantine and some of the characters but I don't know that I found their emotional deoth realistic. There were many scenes in the novel where I thought the characters reaction was inconsistent with the sequence of events which pulled me out of the narrative.
While the book was not bad, I can't say I enjoyed it. I would not recommend this books to others unless they had read the author and the series before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
Loved this book, the whole series is witty and funny with romance and action included. Toni and Ian's story is a must, but I would recommend reading the whole series from the beginning as characters reoccur.

Most hilarious book I've read in a long time. Highly recommended. Ms. Sparks is now 2nd on my favorite author list right after Jim Butcher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Spitzenklasse!!
