The New York Times bestselling author revisits his signature world of Midkemia in this first book in a new trilogy that ushers in the third, and most dramatic, Riftwar yet: the Darkwar

Flight of Nighthawks picks up two years after Exile’s Return as Pug, the powerful sorcerer, awakens from a nightmare that portends destruction for all of Midkemia. Disturbed by his dream, Pug calls for a convening of the Conclave of Shadows.

Meanwhile, in a small town on the other side of Midkemia, two young brothers are coming of age. As they travel away from home, towards apprenticeships and adulthood, the boys are attacked by bandits and mistakenly transported to Sorcerer’s Isle, the home of the Conclave of Shadows.

Though they are untrained and unready, the brothers will join the powerful, mysterious Conclave to confront Midkemia’s most looming evil yet―the Nighthawks, assassins feared throughout the centuries. And Pug will face his old nemesis, the evil wizard formerly known as Sidi, now Leso Varen, in a confrontation with everything at stake: his honor, his life, and the future of Midkemia.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This first of a new fantasy trilogy from bestseller Feist (Exile's Return) reintroduces a now ancient but well-preserved Pug (the juvenile hero of Magician) plus numerous generic situations, not the least of which is the return of Pug's old nemesis, the evil wizard Sidi, and a further menace that threatens the land of Midkemia. All the characters talk in completely 21st-century vocabulary, and while some of the inhabitants of the imaginary setting have unusual names suggestive of alien language and culture, we also meet folks named Miranda, Tomas, Magnus, Caleb and Zane. The result does not add up to any sense of a real, other place like Middle Earth or Earthsea, in which mythic events might plausibly occur. Those looking for the numinous wonder of Tolkien or the beautiful language of Ursula Le Guin will have to look elsewhere, but readers seeking to move one step up from adventure-gaming tie-in novels will find this a good starting place. From Booklist

Feist expands the uber -saga of Midkemia again with a new trilogy, The Darkwar Saga. In it eventual arch-mage Pug (see Exile's Return, 2005) is much younger, his vast powers are still forming, and he hasn't yet acquired the array of family ties that will make him so wonderfully human later on. Right now he is trying to contend with evil sorcery and win the tolerance, if not allegiance, of the emperor. Reinforcing him are two fugitive farm boys, Tad and Zane, and their mentor, Caleb, whose aid proves invaluable as all three youngsters mature, the farm boys with the additional help of another mage's daughters. The boys' growth entails some of Feist's most notable feats of characterization, feats that testify to the substantial improvement he has made as a writer during a career now approaching the 20-year mark. He leaves us curious, even eager, to see what the succeeding two books will reveal about Midkemia's history and what parts Tad and Zane play in it, though perhaps under new and different names. In this book Feist starts you with two carefree young boys in the small town of stardock, by the names of Tad and Zane. They are fine with no problems until, they find that they are without a skill, job, or anything to make a living in the demanding upcoming years of adulthood. But when an old friend of their mother's, Caleb, offers to bring them to the city of Krondor to find jobs their lives become much more than they expected. On their way they are attacked and Caleb is brutally injured. They're not only put up to the challenge of bringing Caleb back to safety without getting killed, but to find out what this secret organization Caleb works for is doing, and stopping an evil magician from taking the emperor's body and throwing the world into chaos. In this exciting adventure of magic, mystery and treacherous situations you'll find hours of suspense. I highly recommend this awesome book to anyone who likes a good, cunning, fantasy book.

I've read and enjoyed nearly all of Raymond Feist's books. Through his sagas, he's created a rich and deep world, with tons of interesting characters, compelling stories, and great interactions.

In a lot of ways, the Darkwar Saga's opening act is no exception. Finally venturing deep into Kesh for an extended story, this tale gives new life to a portion of Midkemia that maybe was not quite as fleshed out in my mind at least. And I actually admire the fact that Feist has been able to introduce yet ANOTHER "greatest threat ever to face the world" for yet ANOTHER trilogy, and do so in a way that actually seems plausible rather than just a tacked on addition to sell more books.

But I find myself in this series more than ever reminded of how Feist's books just don't develop new characters the way they did in the past. The strength of the book is on the interactions of characters that were introduced and fleshed out in what many would call Feist's prime...the Serpentwar and Riftwar Sagas. Pug, Nakor, Miranda, Tomas...these are the characters that got me excited when I got to a section detailing their contributions.

The new characters in this book just don't get the same treatment anymore, and they feel shallower for it. It makes me glad that he made several of my favorite old characters (like Pug and Tomas) effectively immortal so that I can keep enjoying them on and on and on.

All in all, I still find this a solid effort. To say it's not as good as Magician is not a huge insult...that book was fantastic. The story was still a page-turner, and it did contribute to fleshing out the fantastic world of Midkemia. But there was still that part of me that looked back while reading this book moreso than others, and regret that at least some of the magic is fading.

A nice day for a gunfight and two against one. Once again I have been drawn in to follow and my beginning assumption was all wrong. The game is on. Great read and were off.

I love everything Raymond has done so my reviews will look the same. I love how he develops not just the older, familiar characters, but also the new ones. It brings a freshness to his timelines keeping the old fans as engaged as the new ones for every arc he does

This book by Raymond Feist is very much part of his normal formula for books. His books tend to focus around the creation of young male characters and how they develop their talents to move the world in there own ways. Feist continues the adventures in the fantasy world of Midkemia with visits from some original characters and various other characters that have appeared in his other works. Pug makes another appearance as well as Nakor to continue Feist's exploration into the balance of good and evil.

This book is just a plain fun fantasy book. If you have liked Feist's other works you will most probably like this one as well. I did find this one to be less worthy of praise than his others works. Magician was by the best of the books produced and the Serpentwar Saga was probably the best series, this just doesn't stand in the same league.

enjoyable, but did NOT like the ending - a rather lame "bridge" to another few books to be written in the future

The author has not failed yet to provide a great reading experience. While I believe I may have read this book in the series out of the recommended order the storyline fell right into previous books. New characters were added, old character remained and a very good story was told. For those reading the Riftwar series this is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional stuff from Feist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2005
Feist has run hot and cold over the years. His early work was utterly brilliant. Some of the stuff in the middle hit lows of the decidedly mediocre, but since Talon of the Silver Hawk Mister Feist's star has been in the ascendant. What better way to climb right back to the top of the heap than with a brand new series that draws heavily upon the world we all know and love.
Is it a new series? Well, technically yes it is, although it is fair to say that it follows directly on from the King of Foxes. However, the plot of this new book seems to have grown. All of a sudden Feist has developed a new plot for his enormous playground of a world and these two things have taken him back to his brilliance of old. Everyone - and I mean everyone - makes an appearance in this book. Whether you favorite character was Erik Von Darkmoor, Thomas or Pug of Crydee, Tal Hawkins or, well, whoever, you'll come across them here. As if that wasn't enough, you'll be all over the place from Novidus to the Kingdom to Kesh. Better still, there is a strong inference that we'll be spending some more time in the Empire of Tsuranuanni in the next book.
In short, this is a good book that is well worth buying. It's a pleasant reminder that Feist is probably the best creator of Fiction/Fantasy out there.
